    Any good stand-alone -10db pads?

I just got a new Great River preamp and I love the thing to death....but it has no -10db pad. When I pair it with a mic like my Studio Projects C1 (very hot level, no pad of its own) I run into a few situations where I can't avoid clipping even with the gain all the way down. So, anybody...

Recorded in a pro studio yesterday. Showed me a lot.

The band I run sound for spent the day in Studio 4 just outside of Philly yesterday. I tagged along for the experiance and to offer my input (and play one track of shaker egg :) ). It was a one song one shot deal. The studio and the producer (Phil Nicolo) were definatly the real deal. Bands...

Bringing "life", "air" and other unclear ambiguous terms to my recordings....

Bringing "life", "air" and other unclear ambiguous terms to my recordings.... I've been pretty frustrated with some of my work lately. There is just something missing.... I can only describe it as "life" or "sparkle" or something like that. When I listen to a pro recording in my monitors (or...

Experimented with real cymbals + fake drums...New song

Well, my band has been writing new stuff, and they decided they needed a demo of the new stuff to give away free at shows when people buy our EP. So we stomped this one out last night. :) Because of its "demo" status, it did not get the real drum kit treatment (I am slooooooow at mic'ing a...

After a ton of work, I'm almost done.

This is a project I've been working on for a looooooong time. It represents the first serious attempt I've made at recording, and given my situation I think it's come out alright. So, with no treated rooms, a decent (Roland 2480) recorder, ultra budget mics and pre-amps (Studio Projects C1...

Found an interesting use for the "under the snare" mic

I don't know if this is common or not, but I just stumbled upon it. I always record the underside of the snare, but I rarely end up using it. Today I was mixing a song that was just a pain in the ass as far as the snare drum was concerned. Ghost notes all over the place, so I couldn't get a...

Live vocal mics other than SM58

Any ideas? Our singer owns an SM58 and it sounds just awful on his voice. He is a great singer with a great voice and sounds great in the studio, but through that SM58...ugh. We even had one song where a guest came on stage to do vocals and as soon as he stepped up to the mic it was like a...

Scare the Night: Second mix attempt

OK, this is the same song that I posted yesterday, but now it has a new mix. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I tried opening the drums up and giving everything more "air". Please let me know what you think. I overwrote the old file, so this mix is in the exact same location...

New song: Looking for mix/tracking feedback

Here is a 1st mix of a recording I did for my band. The song's called "Scare the Night". I'm just looking for some feedback. The mix isn't final yet, but this is generally it. Any tips to make it great? Anything any of you would re-track before finalizing the whole song? Thanks. Oh yeah...

Recording accoustic guitar: Getting rid of pick noise

What is the best way to minimize pick noise on an accoustic guitar. When I record it is so loud that it litterally overpowers the hi hat. I've tried many different mic positions and several different mics. The only positions that have reduced the pick enough either let in too much "room...

    Unfinished recording: Drum tracks

Hello again. My band Omnisoul (http://www.omnisoul.com) has just begun recording our first full album. So far, we have recorded one drum track (we just started 2 days ago), and since this is my first serious attempt at recording acoustic drums, feedback would be appreciated. Bass, electric...

    Looking for feedback..... 1st demo

Hello all. I've recently joined forces with a band named Omnisoul as their personal live soundman/demo recording guy. We just put out a demo, and I'm looking for feedback. The MP3's can be found on the Omnisoul webpage here: http://www.omnisoul.com/index_music.html The only recording/mix...

POD: How does it color tone?

OK, I've never used a POD before. Most of the time I mic a guitar. Sometimes a plug a guitar or bass (or guitar multi effects) directly into the borad and then adjust the trim until I get a good level. How does a POD sound different than plugging right in and setting the trim? If it doesn't...

Max DB for a large diaphram condenser

OK, I think I may be a little stupid. I was micing a drum kit, and I put my C1 about a foot above the kit over the ride cymbal. It is distorting badly now. Did I fry it with a sound that was too loud or do I have to search for possible electrical problems that fried it?

    Compression for radio play. Why?

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but.... Why do songs get compressed for radio play? Are there broadcasting laws that somehow dictate that? Can FM not broadcast a large enough dynamic range? Do they just want to be "louder"? Is the signal easier to recieve once it gets to...
