    D.C.-area peeps....

The d.c. space Reunion is happening Sunday, July 29th at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $20, doors at 7:15PM. This is an event you do not want to miss. This will be a convergance of a lot of the great folks who were at the core of a scene that "put D.C. on the map." I guarantee that if you face...

    Geordie Walker

Alright, you want to talk about distinctive guitarists? I humbly submit that Geordie Walker of Killing Joke has perhaps the most distinctive tone around and has been a bigger influence to other guitarists than he is given credit for. Discuss.

    The CD Trade Thread

Has this been done already? I list CDs I want to get rid of. You do, too. I see something on your list I want, and vice versa. We mail each other said CDs. Equal cost on both sides. RULES 1. No copies/bootlegs. Original discs only. 2. Umm, well that pretty much says it all I think. Yay? Nay?

    Laugh while you can, monkeyboy!

I finally had the time to record a cover of the Buckaroo Banzai theme. Half the fun was in deconstructing the original which was chock full of 80's synth sounds. Luckily my Korg X5D was up to the task. I added a real bass to support the synth bass, so this version is not entirely faithful. But...

    First, mix 2

Here is a new mix of my new song. I added some 'verb to the acoustics, some woodwinds and strings with my X5D, some compression to the drum bus, and generally tweaked all the levels! The acoustics were mic'ed with an MSH-4.

    MSH-4 questions for mshilarious

Last night I recorded a new song. There are two different acoustics on it and each one was mic'ed with my MSH-4. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=5995 One thing I noticed, though, is while moving the mic around it would sometimes produce a high-pitched tone akin to feedback. It...

    Ford Van - Reaper question

OK, I've finally gotten around to trying Reaper and so far I'm liking it. Seems solid and stable. Good features, decent plug-ins included. It does seem similar to Vegas, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to set up aux f/x sends. Is this even possible? Or do all f/x have to be track...

Any edjumacted guesses before I get it serviced?

My Tascam 38 has been on the fritz for more time than I care to admit. And while I am currently unemployed and cannot afford to have it fixed, I'd love to get the analog gurus' opinions before I eventually do. The last time I tried to mix something on it, when I hit play it started playing...

    Red

OK, here's a cover I did of this classic King Crimson song about 8 or 9 years ago. This was recorded analog on my Tascam 38 and mixed down to DAT (Tascam DA-30 MKII). This was around the time that I got serious about engineering, but I really don't remember all the gear I used. Me on all...

Blue thinks we're a bunch of geeks.

I downloaded the pdf manual for the Blue Snowball in an effort to help someone with a question yesterday. What I found was a manual that was trying to emulate the humor of the Mackie manuals, but to me it was condescending to those of us that have been working hard to understand what the hell it...

Rokket! I love you, buddy, but you are killing me!

Literally! The new mix is better, but I still sound like I'm speeding up and slowing down and shit. I'm starting to think there was something wrong with the guide track you sent me, because this is a helluva lot tighter than what I downloaded off of Soundclick. I have a reputation in D.C. as a...

    My new acoustic

This L. Benito guitar was part birthday present and part thanks for all my hard work helping my bandmates move to Baltimore. These guitars had a limited production run (I think less than 100 were made) and were completely hand made (no routers used) in Chile from a cache of alerce wood that was...

    Kick technique

I'm curious as to how y'all smack that bass drum. I am of the school that says the beater must not remain rested on the head on a hit, yet most drummers I see tend to do this. Me, I let the drum speak for itself. Please don't just vote. Expound on what works for you. Thanks.

    Man, I am thick sometimes...

Shortly before she moved to California, the singer in my previous band, The Beautiful Failures, gave me her Beta 87 claiming it was broken. I plugged it in to test it and sure enough no sound. I figured I'd get around to having it serviced one day, so I stuck it in the closet and forgot about...

    Yamaha HS series

I just saw an ad in the new AMS catalog for Yamaha's new active monitors. They look suspiciously like the NS-10s, especially the woofers. But get this - on page 22, the main caption reads "If your mix sounds good on these, it'll sound good on anything."   :D...

    Pixelant

OK, be warned that this is an improv (read: jam). Blindfold is my side project and consists of me and my friend Darrel. This is a live jam that I think was partly inspired by the Allan Holdsworth concert we went to a few weeks ago. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=4039
