original song, please critique my mix

Thank you for the detailed reply. I now understand that what I have is a demo. Like I stated above, I am hoping to use some of the principles I learn in this thread to apply to other mixes I am experimenting on with friends. With the vocals, I know what I need to work on there. With the dryness...

original song, please critique my mix

Hi, thank you for taking the time to listen and reply. I believe I read somewhere else around here that wearing too many hats can work against some folks. I 100% agree with your assessment that I need to work more on the music aspect of recording and mixing my own songs, and I appreciate your...

original song, please critique my mix

I've recorded dozens of songs but this is my first stab at mixing. I think I need to work more on volume automations on the vocal track. What do y'all think? Hit me hard, make it hurt. Thanks for listening! Time Wasting Away vocals, guitar line, guitar mic

Can anyone help me with volume automation options?

Now I am way at the bottom of the noob totem pole, so what I say may not be accurate at all. I use Cakewalk and I thought there was a setting somewhere that would allow you to control what happens when you stop recording and then start again. I have it set where the second start stays on the...

Why aren't my vocals cutting through the mix?

Hi, thank you so much for all the detail. I have some work to do, haha.

Hand Me Down My Walking Cane

I really enjoyed the performance. My friend and I have a similar setup where I sing and play rhythm on either clawhammerish banjo or guitar and he plays leads with guitar. I don't know enough about mixing to comment there but overall I think it was excellent.

Why aren't my vocals cutting through the mix?

Thank you, I like your minimalist style. For option 2, if you use a wide reverb on the guitar track, what kind of reverb would you recommend for the vocal track that would complement?

Why aren't my vocals cutting through the mix?

Thank you. When you speak of cutting low end, are you talking about EQ? Since the OP did not specify what type of music they are recording, my question is the same but definitely pointed in the solo acoustic singer/songwriter direction.

Why aren't my vocals cutting through the mix?

Thank you for your reply. One issue is that I am a little below amateur. For guitar instrumentals, I have used the method of one mic at 12th and the other in the bridge direction. However, when recording vocals I sing and play, so there is already some vocals ending up in the guitar mic/s and...

Why aren't my vocals cutting through the mix?

Thought about making my own thread but decided to jump into this one instead. I have a few questions that pertain to recording vocals and minimal acoustic instrumentation. If I have a project with nothing more than a vocal track and a single miked acoustic guitar track, would I be able to...

Does CbB allow installation of our own effects plugins?

Thank you. Yeh, the forum has been sending 500/502/504 error screens periodically throughout the day for several days last week. If you check the Feedback Loop, which discusses the forum itself, there are a couple of threads of people raising the alarm and wanting to know why the site keeps...

Does CbB allow installation of our own effects plugins?

Hi, thank you for replying. I figured out what the problem was. I had gone to Bandlab's website, created an account, and opened their Cakewalk Studio app. If you try to mix a song on their online app, you can only use their plugins. No way to insert your own. Once I realized what a knucklehead I...

Does CbB allow installation of our own effects plugins?

On my end, the official Cakewalk forum keeps kicking me off and I can't get in... I've been recording with Sonar 7 SE for years on an old XP machine but want to use some 64 bit effects plugins while mixing on a different computer. Does Cakewalk by Bandlab allow for us to import our own VST...

strange sounds when recording acoustic guitar with k&k p/u

You're good. I knew the two were not related, but I still appreciate your input because the advice was solid.

strange sounds when recording acoustic guitar with k&k p/u

Thank you for replying. Yeah, sorry. I knew the impedance thing was unrelated to the woosh sound. I figured I would welcome the unrelated advice and run with it. The project files containing that take are on my DAW desktop, which is currently located in a spare bedroom of my friend's house. I...

strange sounds when recording acoustic guitar with k&k p/u

@bouldersoundguy As you suggested, I checked the manuals and specs of the pickup and the interface. The pickup said works best with input impedance between 500k and 1 meg. The interface impedance is 1 mega ohm for an instrument in (3 k ohms for mic). Should work, right?

strange sounds when recording acoustic guitar with k&k p/u

Thank you for the reply and the good info. I forgot to mention that my recording stuff is set up in a spare bedroom. I have a dinosaur DAW desktop that runs XP and I would say my equipment is somewhere between hobbyist and serious hobbyist. I did a quick search on a retail site and came up with...

strange sounds when recording acoustic guitar with k&k p/u

Thanks mods for moving. I originally posted this thread in Guitars but decided it was more of a signal chain question than guitar question. I realized I posted three paragraphs with a little question at the end. The whoosh sound I am describing sounds like someone blowing into a mic. That was...

strange sounds when recording acoustic guitar with k&k p/u

Hello, I think I might know the answer to my own question but still wanted to run it by you all. The other day I was attempting to record into a 4 input audio interface and hit a minor snag. It went vocals, banjo line, banjo mic, guitar line. I thought by plugging in the guitar, it would be less...

Same 2 songs on separate albums, different mixing studios?

Excellent, thank you! They did their work, I paid them, their name is in the credits.... end of transaction. No promises of residuals or anything like that. Had I recorded in their studio with their equipment, I think they would probably have more say in the future of the recordings.
