1st off, I'm in the "micing" camp, not "miking".
I know a professional engineer (live sound mostly, I don't think he does any recording) who staunchly believes that you never need more than 4 mics on a drum kit.
I'm recording 'live' in a small room with 4 mics on the kit. I'm having a hard...
I apologize if this a mixing 101, but is it possible to override automation?
I find that after I get everything automated the way I want and listen to the mix through the limiter, I generally want to make subtle changes to a track volume. However, I can't slide my fader up once I've created some...
This has to be a bad idea for some reason, right?
What would happen if I built a little acoustic cave to surround my mic? We record 'live' so I obviously have a lot of bleed. I was thinking about cutting up some Owens Corning 703 and making a small surround, cave or box for my kick mic, etc...
I've been recording and mixing just long enough to know who to use the tools, but I not long enough to compare tools. I hear a lot of talk about a "great compressor" or a "really nice EQ". What does that mean to you? I know a "great compressor" makes all the difference....
When I'm compressing...
I have no experience building a studio or working with acoustic treatments.
Here's the situation, we're a rock band with a drum kit, electric bass (Apeg SVT100), guitar (Messa Nomad), Vocals (house PA), and harmonica (small amp/house). We practice/write/record in the same room. It's a great size...
From what I understand, the Insert I/O is a TRS effects loops. The usage would be to plug your mic into your board, then run a loop from the Insert to your EQ/Comp/Etc. back to your insert. Correct?
My question is: Why bother with the Insert loop? What do you gain (besides gain staging, no pun...
Hello,
I only have experience with little mixers, but I was recently given a Yamaha 02R.
I have 24 channels/faders. Each channel has an 'ON', 'SEL', and 'Tape' button. I understand the 1st two, but what does that confounded 'Tape' button do? Is there routing I don't understand?
Thanks,
-jaimie

I need some help, I'm in a bit over my head. I have a handful of questions if someone out there has the answers.
My 4-piece rock band is slowly growing a recording studio. We're going for 'live' style, so no iso rooms and minimal overdubs. We began our foray into multi-track recording with a...
