I realize that it can be a bit harder in analog but...

    MIDI Linked Boss BR1600's

I've been thinking about doing this for a while now. It's been possible for a number of years but not really worth it until the 2nd hand price of these machines came down. With them to be had now in the $US500-$700 price range it now starts to get feasible. One midi cable later and they're all...

    Last Cassette Release for 2009

Here we are with the last 'obsolete and unloved' all analog cassette media release for 2009 that I've just finished making. David Carter's live to two track solo album called 'Small Fires'. Recorded on the Revox PR99 and assaulted with various helpings of spring reverb and tape echo. All hand...

    Egg-Bone Rollers

Here's a four tune ep I've made on my Boss BR1600 over the last few weeks. I've made them up after listening to a bunch of old T-Bone Walker 78's and kind of got inspired. Really simple stuff. They've all been made the same way in the attic with a bunch of cheap mikes and all analog instruments...

    CR500 Master Recorder

My fifteen year old lounge room cd player gave up the ghost so my studio one had to come down for household duties so needing replacement. I spotted two of these CR500 Master Recorders on eBay locally for half retail so I nabbed one. Today I hitched it up and burnt a couple of cd's on it. It's...

Anybody know what the bit depth on the BR1600's .VR8 files are?

If, as the specs say, they are 24 bit AD, 24 bit processing and mixing and 24 bit DA then I suspect the .VR8's are 24 bit? Then maybe they are only converted down to 16 bit when output as a .wav or on the cd? :)

Understanding the BOSS BR1600's gain structure.

All the decibel and voltage stuff going on the the now closed thread about analog v. digital got me thinking about what was going on inside my BR1600. I knew it didn't have a +4dbu gain structure because it couldn't handle the output of my Revox PR99 tape recorder into any of it's inputs without...

24 bit in and around, 16 bit out?

In this study I found http://drewdaniels.com/audible.pdf the authors conclude that there is no audible difference between a high bit SACD and a 16 bit CD during playback as revealed in their long term double blind listening test. However, they do make this interesting comment early on in the...

    Jessie Star

Here's one I've noodled away at on my Boss BR digital portastudio in the attic over the last week. It's about a guy contemplating the fact that one of his old school kids' gang has made it as a big Hollywood star. I used the cheapest bunch of mikes I've got; some Behringer condensers and some...

Any idea what the reverb technique is on this?

Here's a version of a classic old tune recorded in 1959, probably direct to mono tape, with buckets of reverb on it. Any ideas as to how it was done?:) http://www.mp3.com.au/Forms/MediaView.aspx?MediaId=136322

    Question regarding recording equalization adjustment?

In the manual for my Revox PR99, it gives the following instructions for checking and adjusting the recording equalization: 1). Adjust AF generator to 12 kHz, 0VU -20db. Okay, I think I understand that, I check that my tone generator is outputting 12kHz, 0VU -20db using the voltmeter then I...
