Guitar 'truths" that you believe are myths

I've got no idea. I've never heard that. But what I do recall is John Lennon, in the Playboy interview a few months before he died, saying that because Paul was left-handed and Paul taught him guitar chords {when they met he could only play banjo chords on the guitar}, he learned them...

    Looking for a new Bass...

I used to definitely have a sound. It wasn't necessarily 'the' sound that I wanted or had been searching for, but for many years, I recorded my bass guitar the same way, more or less and most of the time the sound was pretty much the same. But I never particularly liked the sound. I didn't...

anybody still rocking the hard drive digital recorders from in the 00's ?

It would appear that there are not many of us left. I use the Akai DPS12i and I love it to bits. It's my recording go-to. I made a decision a few years back that I wasn't going to go in any other direction. I'm not going back to tape, I'm not going to go the computer route. I have 3 back-up...

Guitar 'truths" that you believe are myths

The term "frustrated guitarists" is actually not a literal term, but an affectionate one and one that describes a particular style of bass playing that went on to become very influential in the evolution of bass guitar playing and the position of the bass guitar, particularly in the various...

Guitar 'truths" that you believe are myths

That was almost the case in the early days of the bass guitar. If you look at all the bass players that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, virtually every one of them started out on another instrument, with many starting on double bass or guitar. Dave cites Paul McCartney as a decent guitarist...

    I find click-tracks annoying...

If I am going to use the click, I don't mind its ping-ping clickiness. For me, it is literally a timing reference, nothing more, nothing less. If I had a drum machine readily to hand, I'd use that as a click. However, I couldn't be bothered looking for a steady beat in the myriad sounds there...

    Popping sound when recording bass

I agree with Rob and Rich - the raw sound doesn't have the after-effects of the affected sound. A question from the curious - are you a bass player generally ?

    Yamaha AW1600s synced

Fair enough. It didn't come across that you were referring only to novices, it seemed like a reply to Dorian who had already said he was old school. That said, I think we're still in that period where the old technology {I guess, depending on what it is} can still be utilized for those who...

    Referencing a Mix on a Sh*tty Speaker

I suppose technically, it was. Yet of the 1000s of records I had, I don't once recall thinking that the sound of the music was somehow sonically lacking and many of my albums and most of my singles, I recorded straight from vinyl to CD and they still sound great to me.

    Yamaha AW1600s synced

I wholeheartedly disagree with the latter two statements. The old digital machines may be limited in relation to the current bells and whistles DAW, but they are far from limited. I'd compare them to electric bikes and a non-electric one {ie, an actual bike ?}. Sure, you have to use pedal power...

Are we supposed to be our biggest fans?

Because. Sometimes, that song just has to come out. For me, songs are like passing wind. They're in me. They have to come out or, well, there is no "or" about it. The overwhelming majority of my songs I really do like. But there have been a few that I don't exactly "like" but I don't dislike...

    Referencing a Mix on a Sh*tty Speaker

I was agreeing with your point, Jimmy. Words like 'patience' and 'wait' have become dirty words to the impatient who want to become experts yesterday. They often don't want to hear them, rather like no one wants to be called a racist or a pervert.

Is this normal to have such a low input level with a SM57 and Scarlett 2i2 (acoustic guitar examples bellow)

I use both dynamics and condensers on acoustic guitars. I use the condenser more, but it really depends on what kind of sound I'm going for. A dynamic {usually an SM58 or a Superlux} is good for aggressive sounding strumming or picking and can sometimes produce great contrast with the more...

    Referencing a Mix on a Sh*tty Speaker

I think this is very true. And not only here. My observation and experience has been for decades that many of those that 'know' often have not had what it takes to teach or communicate simplicity in a way that can be simply picked up. This is equally true. Many people want to be perfect...

    The process

Every time. I have never once attempted to write a song that sounds like a well-known or even not well-known song. But I have been known to use sections of songs as springboards for ideas. But they never sound like them. For example, I might take a particular progression played on an electric...

    thoughts on AI songwriting service/sites?

I think I'm at the point where I can safely say that no matter what an AI music tool would write and no matter how brilliant sounding, it wouldn't write what I would write. Not if it was intelligent ! That's not at all surprising. Some of the oldest recorded {on paper} pieces of music have...

    Referencing a Mix on a Sh*tty Speaker

I guess the only shitty speaker I might use to check a mix are the ones on my laptop but even then, I never take any notice in terms of changing things because of that sound because the sound is by its very nature shitty. I'm still in that zone of testing a mix on a variety of mediums {boom box...

Mixing the bottom end, below 1K

I'm the very opposite. I honestly haven't a clue about specific frequencies and 40 Hz and 900 KHz or whatever. I really do just use my ears. By now, I think I know when the bass or another instrument is muddy to the extent that it's getting in the way and I just play about with the EQ and other...
