I think that people should be encouraged that they can make pro recordings with only SP mics.
Also, I want to talk about un-mic matters ... is this the place to do it? Or can I only do that if my name is Harvey?
(That should draw the flames from the other thread ;) )
Ok, this is the 'what software should I get' thread to end them all.
I've been used to working with Cubase VST 5.0, however, this was not my copy and the owner has reclaimed it. I can crack it, however, I am anti-piracy and when I used to run cracked software found it way too flakey anyway...
Has anyone heard or ever used any mics made by Calrec? They are a long-standing company based down the road from me and there are a pair of SDCs in my university music school that people are swearing by. They're detachable capsule type things, like the Oktava MK012s I guess. People here are...
For the next two years as of now I get access to these studios:

Cost = £0. University is good. They're expecting a quality 5 minute recording by Christmas though, and I'm not feeling so great about that, having listened to some past years'...
There's nowhere obvious to post this question so I'm gonna do it here where all the clever people hang out
I want to do a little bit of in-ear local monitoring in my live setup. What I want to do is use a little mixer in between my vocal mic and bass guitar and the front of house. I...
I'm picking up a little Yamaha MG because I've decided to put my Behringer where my mouth is ... or maybe that's where my rubbish bin is? Anyway. It's got insert jacks and I have never used them before. What exactly are they, where do they fit in the chain of the channel strip, and what's the...
How come so many of the real knowledgable guys only hang out on the mic forum? I want to ask questions about noise gates and acoustic treatments and all kinds of stuff ... yet the guys who I want to answer - you know who I mean, Harvey, both the chesses, DJL, etc etc etc - save their best work...
Ignoring the obvious limitations for a second, is there any reason why you shouldn't set two mics up next to each other, in near-as-makes-no-odds identical positions, to make comparison recordings? So making a singer sing 'down the middle' of a pair so they get pretty equal incoming signals...
Ignoring the merits of this particular boyband for a second, has anyone any thoughts on how their vocals get to sound the way they do? They sound very 'present' and 'tight' but I don't really know what those words mean!!!! It's certainly a very modern sound.
I'm not trying to get their sound...
... I'm not trying to stir up a 'cheap Chinese' argument, but the brass insert just fell out of my AKG C1000S clip and ... lo and behold ... the thread is completely plastic - well, *was* completely plastic ... now it's completely bald.
Made in Austria. Even the 'big' companies cut corners...
Get them while you can! Digital Village are doing the SP B1 and the VBT1 preamp as a bundle for £139.99 inc VAT ... no idea how long this deal will hold. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE SHOCKMOUNT which was previously £15 on its own!
I've just bought a couple of samples CDs off ebay, some really decent loops and single hits on there. But I just realised, I haven't a clue what to do with them!!
I have Cubase VST 5.0 and a friend is willing to sell me a copy of Fruity Loops 2.7 but I just don't have a clue where to...
How often is the tube in the SP VBT-1 likely to need replacing? I read somewhere that it was a tricky job. I don't know much about tubes ... I've had a hybrid amp with a tube in for five years and someone told me recently I should have replaced the one in there by now....?
At one point this morning I was the most recent poster on the top eight Newbie threads. With this in mind, and looking at the length of some of my replies, I propose to award myself the
"BlueSpinsterBearWunSound Award for Dedication to Newbies"
Now, I know this would be the first time...
Can someone post me a couple of links to some pages on drum overheads, specifically on the precise positionings/angles etc? Some photos might be great too. I'm not happy with the sounds I've been getting and as new equipment may be purchased soon I'd like some ideas on getting the most from...
To settle once and for all that I am not either anti-Behringer or a gear snob (check my gear list for proof!) I propose that we make a list of the Behringer equipment that we have found to be 'good'. By this I don't mean 'usable, if there's no alternative', butthose things that are above...
Ok, so I want to know - is it 'better' for any reason for your mixer's power supply to be internal or external? When I bought my Behringer UB1204 I was told that it having an internal power supply was a great selling point.
Then in the shop the other day I'm looking at Tapco/Mackies and...
For those of you who've not been following, I sniped another HR member without knowing to get this Beyer Soundstar MkII mic for £27. But then the mic never showed, and the seller seemed a bit suspicious, telling me he'd shipped before I'd paid.
But it's arrived, and it works!!!!!
Now I have...
I'm constructing my list of things to buy with my next lump of student finance ... Cubase SX and some monitors are already on the list, but if I'm gonna be broke I should do it in style so:
I need a pair of overheads. Right now I have an SE Electronics SE2200 LDC, a C1000S, some e835 and e845...
