I've finally got what you would call a full setup here in my house. It's spread over two rooms which makes me feel special. I think mics my be my weak point, which is why I'm putting this here. Make me a wish list ... something to aspire to. I keep almost buying mics then getting other stuff...
I should be embarrassed but I'm not. This song was recorded at university for coursework, I have had very limited studio time and had to play all the parts but the drums for myself, but without any engineering help. That means putting click tracks on long count ins and running between rooms...
Can someone give me, or point me to, a detailed description of how to do middle and side? I will have a couple of takes to have a stab at it on Monday and I really want to give it a go. I need something a little more descriptive than the piece on the DPA Mic University site.
I don't have...
I was in the university studio today putting together some recording coursework. I was using scratch tracks from home to streamline the process. Apart from the PC problems I'm having my tracks on my SE2200 and Shure 545 were totally holding up against the ones I was making down there. In...
What do I need to isolate my monitors from my desk/stands? Just got my first proper ones but the floor is shaking and I don't think that's helpful for accurate referencing ;)
Not quite sure where to post this, but the question's quite simple. I've migrated to Tracktion but it has no noise gate. Compressors etc are easy to come by but does anyone know of a noise gate plugin?
I'm having popping/skipping trouble with my PC. It's not related to volume as there's always a tonne of headroom at every stage going in and out of the machine. It doesn't always pop in the same place, yet my CPU usage never goes above about 30% even when multitracking. This is a serious bind...
I've just got my home setup running at last but am having some problems with a funny popping/distortion sound. Here's an mp3 of the kind of noise it's making, on a rough acoustic strummy track:

I've tried changing the mics, mixer and leads...
I'm a total MIDI retard and my friend just sent me this question in an email. Please can you help me?!
I'm afraid I'm not really even sure what he's asking!!!
I know how to use a soldering iron and have a basic understanding of electronics. I fancy making my own leads, can anyone link me a good tutorial of some kind that has a couple of pictures I know how to do it? I think I can figure out jack leads but XLR seems a little more complicated...
I'm after a little amp for two reasons:
1. To be able to practice in my house without losing my housemates as friends.
2. Perhaps to do a little recording. Not important because I am happy enough with the tones I get with Amplitube.
I have a 100w Fender which has a great clean channel but is...
This looks like an interesting little product. Sound on Sound gave the MIC100 a surprisingly good review ... for a £35 preamp this new one looks like it could be fun with its preamp voicing/modelling.
Anyone used it?
I'm not advocating Behringer, by the way ... although I may just pick one up...
A lecturer at university told me today ... totally straight-faced, that compressors don't alter a signal's sound. "No, you don't understand," he said, "They only operate in the amplitude domain - here's the page in the textbook you need to read to find out about compression."
"No", I said...
We were recording a drum track at uni for a colleague's coursework. It was AKG Egg, 57 on snare, MD421s on toms and NT5 overheads, going through a Spirit Studio 24 desk.
Just for a laugh and because I had one lying around I put an AT4050 across the room on omni to see what would happen. My...
So tell me - in all honesty - where is the bottleneck in the quality chain of your recordings? What needs to be upgraded or replaced FAST?
I voted for myself
I'm selling my Behringer UB1204 and my AKG C1000S to raise some revenue for a pair of mics. I need them for overheads, but it would be great if they could try their hand at some stereo recording of piano, acoustic guitar and maybe electric and vocals (in decreasing order of importance).
So...
Behringer stuff is usually the dog's something. The question is - are the PA amps the dog's nuts, or a right dog's breakfast? Bear in mind the power for price.
I need to add a power amp to a live rig as follows:
- Soundcraft M12
- Peavey Eurosys3 15" cabs, Behringer 15" cabs
- Sennheiser...
A lot of guys on here say that to hear a dynamic at its best you need a quality preamp. The Shures are often mentioned in relation to this. My question is - how good a preamp do you reckon it needs to be?
I just bought a Soundcraft M12 (the pres from the Ghost) and am wondering if it may be...
Ok I think I may have accidentally bought an M12 I was drooling over on ebay that I can't afford. The price is exceptionally good and the seller 100% longtime feedback, so the question is this:
Is the M12 good enough an investment to be really hard up til January for? Or shall I pull out...
