    dbx type III NR............

I'm looking into getting a dbx 2231 dual graphic eq and it has type III noise reduction functionality. Anyone experienced with type III? Thoughts? Opinions? I'm looking at this unit to add to my chain inline with my reel to reel (Pioneer RT-909). I know the 128 (type II) is a highly sought...

    TC 300 vs dbx 166XL?

I'm torn between the two models for my vocal (speech & talking, no singing) needs. I'm doing some recordings and when I listen to them, I can hear EVERYTHING going on in the background. I don't have the luxury of having a sound proof room. The house is all tile floors and I don't have an area...

Mixers - Good, bad, or ugly?? Which brand?

I'm not sure if this is even the appropriate section to ask this. If not, Dragon feel free to move it to the correct one. I'm looking for a decent/good 14 track mixer for use in the home for a project. I used to have a Mackie 1402vlzpro and it worked great for what I needed. Then again, I...

    424 mkII.............."sub in" question

Is it possible to route the "sub in" feed to tape or is it strictly designed to go to mix down? All I can gather out of my manual is that it the signal is routed to the master fader (no duh!).

    dbx 128 vs. 228.............

What is the difference in these two units? I've heard ALOT of good things about the 128 noise reduction unit and am looking for one to add inline to my reel to reel. I have found a 228 unit locally for pretty cheap, but I'm not familiar with it. Is it worth having?

Older books on recording, multi-track, reel to reel, etc.

Does anyone know of a good source for locating older books about multi-track recording, reel to reels, and the like? I went to some of the local libraries and they just threw them out! I can understand their point a little bit, but damn, what a waste and what a shame. I could really care less...

    Stuff for auction.........not ebay

I was searching the massive interwebs for some info on a Porta two (from another post) and came across this.......... http://www.govliquidation.com/list/e1914/ctd/2.html To make it easy, use the find function in your browser and find Tascam. Should be a pretty interesting buy.;)

Battery powered multi-track recorder? Is there such a thing?

I currently have a 424mkII recorder, which is wonderful. However, what I am looking for is a smaller, battery powered version..........if there is such a beast. The 414 mk series is smaller, but still AC powered. The Porta 02 is AC powered. Basically what I want one for is to record ambient...

    ATR tape

I don't know how many of you are looking forward to trying out the ATR tape that will be available soon. I shot an email to them a couple of days ago and I just received a response back saying August/September is when tape should become available. They said they would be updating the website...

Cjacek's thread got me to thinkin'........

............always trouble when I think.:D I know this is entirely theoretical but what do guys think would happen if someone started producing open reel decks again (other than the $3k Teac/Tascam)? Do you think people would flock to it since parts/service would be easier to obtain? Or would...

How much is too much for tape?

I didn't want to hijack any other threads for this, so I started a new one. I keep seeing people posting up not to pay too much and that the prices on the web are awfully high right now. What is a good ballpark to look for? The only thing I have to go by is a price tag on the bag of one of my...

    An odd request........

I live in an area that is never really quiet outdoors for doing any type of outdoor recording. I've got a 424mkII that I've tried recording a thunderstorm with recently. I just ran two mics (on tabletop tripod mounts) out the back door and spaced apart on the covered patio. The problem is...

Maxell UD 35-180 : What is the difference???

I see different types of the UD 35-180 boxes in various places. Some are silver/black/blue, silver/black/magenta, black/cyan, etc. What is the difference in these? Is it just changing the look of the box or are there different "grades" of this stuff? Different years? Just curious if there...

    Experimentation is the greatest thing........

Okay, so I'm a newb at all of this and the old timers are going to go "So what". I've been playing around with a Tascam 424 mkII and an acoustic guitar with various results. I have been more or less narrating what I have been doing so later on, if I forget something, I can listen to it and...

Old UD 35-180 vs. RMGI or Quantegy

I have a dumb question. Why would I want to pay an outrageous price for 1 or more old Maxell UD 35-180 10.5" reels (new in plastic......supposedly) when I can get fresh(er) Quantegy or RMGI tape? I have 2 reels of the Maxell and they sound great. However, when one tries to record on a blank...
