Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

It's true stereo. There's no trickery or fac simile involved - It's stereo.

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

That's what it is. That's the foundation of mid-side. The lower your centre mic (or higher the sides) the less natural it will sound. If the centre mic is brought right down to the point where it's barely contributing, you're literally just hearing opposite polarity signals in each ear.

Mid-side decoding issue - Total silence from the two side tracks

Hi, I tested out your wav files and everything works as it should. I do notice that when you're at the left hand side (face of the Cad mic) you're nowhere near as strong sounding as when you're at the right/back. That could just be that you were closer to the mic when you did your right...

Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire driver install on macOS High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina

The .kext file will be included in the installer. Just download it then right-click the .pkg and choose "Show Package Contents" Navigate through that and you should find the kext, probably in a /system/library/extensions structure. From memory you'll need to put the kext where it goes (/S/L/E)...

Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire driver install on macOS High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina

The drivers are still available from Alesis but it looks like the last officially supported MacOS version was 10.8 Mountain Lion. (V3.5.6) Alesis downloads link.

Please could someone answer three questions about limiters and compressers to the dumbass noob writing this?

The best advice I can give is to watch a video tutorial on compression for some plugin that has a visual representation. Avid Dyn3 has got it. I think some of the waves plugins like C1 do it too. You see a diagonal line representing your compressor's impact on the sound and, in real time, you...

    Pro Tools stops frequently

Ok. This ^ is the important question then.

    Pro Tools stops frequently

I don't think I can really give you a straight answer, I'm afraid. Rolling back to an early version of MacOS is free but can be a bit of an upheaval if you're not familiar with the process. Upgrading to a newer version of Protools is probably quite costly, unless you happen to have an active...

Interface monitors and internet speakers / switching between

Hi, I also have a Focusrite Scarlet interface. I set it as my playback device for all audio and systems sounds, and my speakers and headphones are connected it. That way any and all sound coming from the computer goes through monitors and headphones. Is that not working for you?

    Pro Tools stops frequently

Hi, 2022.12.0 isn't marked as compatible with Sonoma, so you'll want to either roll back MacOS to Monterey/Ventura, or upgrade Pro Tools to 2024.3.

    New DAW PC build 2025

There's a number of ways you can go but if backing up is the goal then decide if network access is important, because that determines whether or not you need to dedicate a whole computer to it. If network access is important then do what GainBrain said. Won't be the fastest solution in the...

    New DAW PC build 2025

To be honest I'm inclined to agree. I could see some edge cases where there are compatibility issues between some software and Intel integrated graphics but, to be fair, you can get that with any graphics. A modern machine should be more than capable of home recording duties, even with...

Self-releasing physical media: CDs, USB, tapes, vinyl

I didn't see any update in the previous thread to suggest you'd tried decent quality media. There's every chance your player just won't play any home-burned CD-Rs but testing with cheap media isn't the way to find out.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

Internet forums are littered with countless instances of people asking for CD-R burning help only to come back later and say "I burned at a lower speed and that worked". If you chaps have some data about an optimal speed I'll certainly take it but, for now, our OP is struggling to successfully...

Fair enough. Thanks for the info, Farview.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

Sure but if you're troubleshooting going to the lowest speed isn't going to make anything worse.

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

Get good quality media from a reputable brand (verbatim, for example). Aim for 650MB rather than 700, if possible. Burn at the slowest speed possible. Make sure disc is finalised after burn process. Make sure Disc-at-once burning is ticked. Use reputable software like Toast or Nero for burning...

    Mastering issue

Hi Brian. It's telling you that it can't create that file because the target drive, or path, doesn't exist, is unavailable, or is in use. That probably means either your D: drive isn't mounted or a 'Guitar Man.wav' already exists and is open in another application.

Hi and welcome to HR! I'm not familiar with that software but this video seems to cover basic setup and usage.

I hope it's ok that I make this point

It's an interesting discussion to have, for sure, and, of course, it's OK to make the point or ask the question. I think, like so many things, it probably comes down to honesty and open communication. Every tool or service or technique will have its haters and its supporters but, ultimately, as...
