    turd polish

Yep. This is a turd. I've only recently come up with the arrangement, and now it could take 1-3 months for enough practice to be able to play it consistently enough for a "final" take. My question is, where the hell is that mud? I phucked with this thing for 2-3 hours last night, just...

    differentiating between TRS/TR cables

Is there a visible difference between the two? Here's why: I inherited a bag of chords, all kinds of odds n ends (maybe even an unknown TRS). I ordered some cables, got the invoice, and it appears they have not sent my TRS cable. I was really hoping to have it tonight/tomorrow. So is there a...

Have you upgraded to version 4.0?

How many are still using an older version? Have the bugs been worked out in 4.0.4? I'm really looking forward to the upgrade, is there much, if any of a functional difference, is the interface laid out any differently?

    UB802 for monitoring ONLY(should I bother?)

I'm considering picking up a Behringer UB802, for the sole purpose of monitoring from an audiophile 2496. Then I would have proper headphone jacks, as opposed to the "ghetto-Y-adapter-abomination". I have far too many cable/wires running here and there already. My question is, if the only...

    An abandoned forum...

Is this a good sign? Has N-track finally reached a point of reliability and usability that no one needs to ask question any more? Or has everyone just run off somewhere else? Where is everybody? :(

    AP2496 monitoring question

I found a couple of diagrams for the Audiophile 2496, and all of them show a seperate amplifier being used for monitoring, even when the monitors are labeled in the diagram as being powered monitors.... WTF? Can you run powered monitors directly from the RCA outs on a 2496??? I just can't...

How often do latency and dropouts...

How often do latency and dropouts bite you in the arse? Is buffer size only a problem when installing a new soundcard, or constant concerns which always must be compensated for? Does the buffer size always need to be adjusted as track count grows, or is it dependant upon how many tracks you are...

    2 questions

What affect would insufficient phantom power have? Is there just no way of knowing without a/b comparison? Where can I find info on recognizing phase issues. I understand the obvious drop in volume when out of phase, but how do you recognize when you are "a little" out of phase(without being...

getting tired of the MR8? Wanna go direct to PC?

I'm feeling unusually whiney today, so I think I'll unload on all of you good people. The MR8 has been a good introductory tool, but I am TIRED of its limitations and inconveniences. The screen is hard to see, unless you build an angled shelf for it.. the effects suck the pre's suck the...

    Troubleshooting a pickup

My old baseball bat of a Kramer decided it no longer liked the dimarzio Fred in the neck position. It's been my long held, possible misconception, that very little can go wrong with the actual pickup itself. Is this true? When I place the 5-way in the neck position, there is nothing, no hum...

    Somebody help PLEASE help me!!!

Fostex Forum ThreadCould someone be so good as to go to this thread and verify what I've been told by a Fostex Technician. Especially the last post, where I'm told by the Tech to turn my TRIM all the way down on the MR8. Please and Thank You Very Much!!!

    MR8 and DMP3?

Anyone here use both of these? I'm wondering which output on the DMP3 matches up to the MR8. The DMP3 has the both +4 and -10dB. Which one is appropriate for the MR8??? I couldn't find it in the manual, but I'm off for a 10th look... Enlightenment appreciated. More questions to follow! :D

    EQ during tracking

Does anyone do any EQing during the recording of vocals, or does everyone for the most part just leave it flat? I'll probably end up experimenting with it, but I was just wondering what to expect from bumping, maybe 1k-2k up a hair....? Would this make the vocals cut through a bit more?

    XLR "gender"???

Which is which? I'd assume that the end of an XLR with the prongs would be male, is this correct? The end then that plugs into most mic's being female???

    ? for Yorkville YSM1P users

I have a pair of YSM1P's, which are plugged into my crappy on-board soundchip via a Y-adapter (one 1/8 - two 1/4). The 1/4's (@ the monitor's) do not seem to make a good connection, and never have. The slightest movement and they crackle/drop out/etc.. Has anyone else had this happen, or...

    Where to buy computer monitor

My wifes old HP had the monitor poop out. Can anyone point me in the direction of cheap monitors? I don't want to invest much in this, just to get her by until the whole PC fries... (no, she won't let me replace the PC, even though I think I could build one for pretty cheap) Any suggestions...

    pre-amp "transition" period?

My tax returns are finally on the way, delayed by the run-around from the bank about our statement (long story). I am (as always) on a tight/nonexistant budget (childrens medical bills), so I've pretty much settled on the DMP3, and maybe a Senn e609. The "pre" I was using was a mackie PA head...

    cubase(cakewalk?) vs. Ntrack

My friend (who lives far, far away) recently bought cakewalk. Which brings about a couple of questions; What's the difference from Ntrack, will I be able to edit his tracks? What does cakewalk have on Ntrack that would make someone prefer it (it costs more, right?)? Why does soy-candle-wax not...

Finding the "sweet spot" on a speaker...

Finding the "sweet spot" on a speaker (close micing a guitar cab/amp)... I've read recently after searching, of a method of "finding the sweet spot", which only involved listening on headphones, while moving a mic in front of the speaker, for the location on a speaker where the "hum" was...

    Fellow-one-roomers (drum vibrations)

I've got all of my crap crammed into a small, somewhat irregular room (as opposed to...?). I had my guitar amp sitting within 4 feet of my drums, when I heard what can only be described as someone dragging a garbage bag full of broken glass. For a minute I thought my tubes were going out...
