Blind Test - Recorded Tube Amps vs Amp Sims

It ain't the sound. It's the "feel" that tube amps do and others don't

    SM57 on a Martin D35

Acoustic guitars. While there is a bit of conventional wisdom, there are SO many variables. for instance I have two Martin Dreads and they sound totally different. And a Breedlove Read that sounds NOTHING like the Martins.

Do you always crank power amp tubes??

The majority of my amps are lower power (15 to 30 watts). I do use a Tube Screamer from time to time but usually just drive the amp. Above that is too much for me

A subject dear to my heart. I have a couple of combo's I have gravitated to over the years. I like a Royer R10 and a an MD441 or a SM57 I took the transformer out of. Only one mic? The Royer.

    A Tribute To A Friend

My best friend passed away yesterday. A gentleman named Dave Agnew. A professional musician and my friend. I've logged more time in front of an audience and a microphone with this gentleman than any other human. When we first got together, he was involved with a group at the VA comprised of...

    Going DAW-less

I track to an Alesis HD24. Just hit record and forget about it. I still transfer it to a computer for fuckery.

    electric guitar pickups

Tele's are plenty spanky but can growl too. That comes down to the amp. In the Humbucker world, in my experience, BurstBuckers are bright.

How would you mix three drum mics in the stereo field, bass drum, snare, and overhead?

Centered for sure. I do it all the time

    Recording hand percussion

Especially things like tambourine, the mic is very far away, like in the next room. I sit at the console with the door to the drum room open and I turn on the drum overheads. It tames the transients

Alesis HD24 and BRC for sale...

Two things. I clock my BRC with a GenX6 so I can operate at 44.1. Second is I have to "prime" a song on the HD24 by arming tracks and recording a second or two FROM THE HD24. After that I can rewind and start recording

    Power Pop

Reminds me of the style of band I was in about 18 years ago. Similar power pop kinda sound. I actually really like this. It has some pretty good moments. I think it could stand some refining. Over all pretty cool.
