A lot of it is dependent upon your playing style. EQ can be very helpful to have your tracks sit in their proper space according to your liking. Compression, on the other hand, is a different nut to crack and learning how to to use it properly. I've come close a few times....accidentally.

I have an AW16G that I record to. It's true that the manual could have been better written, but once you get a handle on learning the machine, it becomes second nature to operate it. Kinda like riding a bicycle.

Perhaps I was mistaken. I was under the impression that it was you who had done the original mix and not a mixing engineer to whom you had hired who then passed it on to a mastering engineer.

And then what? Tweak your original mix and have it mastered again necessitating more tweaking of the tweaked mix? That process could go on forever.

I hope someone else, a drummer, can better advise you how to capture that muffled/distorted kick sound.

Oh no! Never, was I comparing you to anyone else. Over driven sound? That sound was always at the very edge of distortion whenever I listened to AM radio. It was...what it was. Difficult to hear lyrics.
