Two Tascam 1/2" transport issues (TSR 8 and 58)

This can be the result from adjusting a pot by effect rather than the procedure they give you. Doing the effect method depending on the sensitivity of the trimmer can take a very long time if not not work at all. Hitting that sweet spot will be a task.

Do Tape head cleaner or rubber conditioner go bad?

Don't defend manufactures as all they are there is to make money and when they try and do something wrong they get away with it for a time but when you have older equipment then you find out what they know. So if all these Japanese companies are so God like then why do they very often have...

Joining the Tascam 388 party... am I crazy?

People are not likely to agree with me but then they don't always anyway. Mr Scott said it perfectly when he said the more they take up the plumbing the easier it is to stop up the drain. What this means is when Technology allows one to do crazy things like put 8 tracks on 1/4" tape, it might...

    Tascam 48 Calibration clarification

Calibration was always done using the RCA jacks, we only check to see if the XLR connection work other than that they are a waste of time. They are not going to be cleaner as they derive their source signal from the unbalanced circuits in the deck and then add amplification and more circuit to...

Two Tascam 1/2" transport issues (TSR 8 and 58)

It is hard to give advice when people go adjusting pots away from the procedure that is written in the book. You might get it to work some of the way but the test is the specs of the fast wind in each direction per the manual. On a X1000R I worked on the wind speeds for 1800 feet are to finish...

    Help with part replacement?

It would be good to notice if the transistors have silver or black leads on them. The Black leads did not start out that way but they are well known in some Akai decks for the black working up the lead to the substrate and then making the transistor defective in some way. Transistors can be...

    Quick question for engineers

I would use continuity tests only on traces and not to see if conduction is going through transistor pairs that may not even be turned on. Op Amps have a very high input impedance and they are designed that way and so they should not show any conduction to ground or Vcc. A better appraisal might...

Mod Allen & Heath for direct outs?

Do not use flashlight battery knowledge on a device like this. Tapping on the fader is wrong as the load impedance will affect the signal and make a mess of it from that point on. The correct way and Engineer would do it is find out what signal you are looking for and then tap off the driving Op...

    odd thing happening....

The correct way to attempt a repair of this type even with no schematics is to send a signal in like 1KHz and then trace with a scope the signal as you see it progress and compare bad channel to good. This might not be a thing to do for beginners as even having a scape might not be the case but...

    Soldering iron wattage?

There is yet another item to add to the equation. Tip size and shape. In working with small joints the tip will have a reduced temperature as it takes longer to heat recover than the more broad part of the tip, So not only does it help to have an adjustable iron temp but it also matters how you...

    Tascam M30 VU meters

Rick answered the question but Hi Fi Engine has the M30 manual. The Op and Maintenance manual are the same. It is about 20MB.

    Tascam 688 eq

I would have to get another in my shop to check but any input you select should be going to the EQ section so tape should be able to be EQ after recording. The switch array on the 688 has a lot of people confused- it is usually too much for a musician I am worried. But if the guy is in the...

Porta One Hi Speed Upgrade: a.k.a Poor man's 244

They had two heads they used. One wore much longer than the other. The 6008 (end 4 numbers that we refer to them as) was the better head and were use in decks like 234.

Porta One Hi Speed Upgrade: a.k.a Poor man's 244

It is a really simple thing to do but increasing the speed on a deck with a soft 4 channel head might not be that great as you will never see that head again. Heads for cassette decks are disappearing quickly. Some great ideas at times end up being bonehead ideas in the end.

There Are Now Fewer Repairing Decks That Know What They Are Doing!

I am working with a pile of guys but to say they are all ready is not true. Jeff in SC, Mathis in VA, Bru in SF CA, Mike in CA . They are working on decks now but still learning.

There Are Now Fewer Repairing Decks That Know What They Are Doing!

Yes, I have known for many years that companies take advantage of the service shops just so they can be authorized to get parts. Most of these manufactures are gone so there is no more a reason to have a warranty station. Most good old stuff can be fixed but there are still challenges such as...

There Are Now Fewer Repairing Decks That Know What They Are Doing!

I make this warning as Tom in Nashville retires, the unit I saw from a so called Technician from BC was nothing but a total mess so he can not be rated as a real Tech. He puts all kinds of pictures on his FB page but when you check the work he has done it was very minimal and also what he did do...

    Tascam 38

Fuses do not burn out for small reason but very big trouble reasons. In all my years I do not remember the fuses burning out due to a motor problem. They usually go out when amateurs do things in the deck and make sparks. I was just called the other night and there are no DC capstan motors left...

    Alesis ADAT format

I am in the service business and NO I am not looking for more work as I have plentty but a client asked me where to get a ADAT fixed that he has. I knew a guy in Chicago that did them all the time but he disappeared. Anybody have a contact point for a person that still fixes these items?

    Teac A3340S issues

I did have a A3300SX deck one time operate intermittently. What was found out that the filter cap had opened and the solenoid would be getting half wave rectified AC. Then what happen is that when the timing of the buttpn press was at a peak of the sine wave it would activate- if at 50% or the...
