    New DAW PC build 2025

Just thought I would jump on the coat tails of this thread! I am researching a refurbished laptop for my son in France. He presently has a Lenovo T430 W10 but I want to future proof him with a decent W11 machine around November time*. So far, for my budget of around £600 I have found a 15.6"...

    Help about recording

"It might help if you learn some VERY BASIC electronic terminology. Balanced vs unbalanced connections, types of connectors (RCA vs XLR vs 1/4" jack), signal levels and impedances." For SURE! I used to say this very often when posting in forums up to about 2 years ago when it was obvious...

Help Recording DI Distorted Guitar Tones

No NEED but could help. The Solo has an input Z of 1 meg as indeed one would expect. A cheapo passive DI box will be no higher than 200k and could be as low as 100k (depends on the traff and the mic pre) That low impednace is going to cause some "tone suck" i.e. loss of high frequencies. In any...

Help Recording DI Distorted Guitar Tones

Now, I am NO guitarist! I am also deaf past 2kHz (that TWO folks!) but yes, that was not nice. Even I was getting the harsh "fizz". What people with good hearing made of it GAKnows! A few things I have been told by a talented son, You can't distort full chords. The music theory bods here will...

High end recording gear vs high end audiophile listening gear.

I agreed with the logic of going with the vinyl copy because, as they say in the article, that is the mix the fans will know and love. A fresh mix from master tapes would be technically better but would always be some OTHER persons idea of how it all should go. Plus I seem to recall that not...

    mix in mono?

IF you are going to mix down to mono don't do it on headphones and ideally use a single speaker with the two channels properly summed. A phantom image from "stereo" speakers is not quite the same thing. Dave.

    Bought a 'damaged' Tele

Unless you want to sell it and make a profit I would not bother to repair that damage. Take off any loose material and give the area a LIGHT rub down with fine wire wool dampened with a little meths ( the de-greasing fluid NOT drugs!) Dry with kitchen cloth and give a light spray of clear...

High end recording gear vs high end audiophile listening gear.

Maybe before my time taking the mag Rob? (Feb? 2005) Their most enlightening tests was on mic pre amps where several pres ranging in about a 10:1 price point were used on a MIDI controlled acoustic grand with the same microphones. The clips were published blind and readers invited to 'match'...

High end recording gear vs high end audiophile listening gear.

"Audiophiles prioritize transparency and perfect reproduction." Not at ALL what I recall Drew P. I have not bought a "hi fi" magazine in a decade or more. I was a devotee of Hi Fi News for many years, along with Studio Sound. The other mags, "What HiFi " and such had always been subjective and...

    Syncing tracks

I think I had better put you all in the picture! The band my son plays bass for have just bought a Xenyx 2442 mixer. 10 MIC channels and 8 direct outs. I can see their next move will be wanting to record those DOs but son only has a MOTU M4, 4ins and a Tascam hand held, another 2 inputs. Thus...

    Studio cable management software

^Yes! And I personally cannot see how a CAD program can help with that? I also think that if a patchbay setup is NOT half normalled you lose one of its biggest advantages and every day is sphagetti junction! Dave.

    Syncing tracks

Say I have 2 tracks recorded (44.1kHz, 24bits) from my MOTU M4 in a DAW as .wav files. Then two more recorded on a Tascam handheld, same .wav, same sample rate/word length. Can I just drop them into the DAW and have them work? I know enough to know the two interfaces will not run at EXACTLY...

    Studio cable management software

The usual procedure is to draw up all the inputs and outputs, one upon the other and have them "half normalled". The trick is deciding which ins and outs to pair up. Now I know Jack about CAD but I don't see how it can help you make that decision? Assuming the mixer has Direct Outs, to my...

Cant get a stereo mix in my mackie hm4 headphone amp

Yes Rich but the headphone feed might be the same as the Main Mix output feeding , I assume, the PA? Dave.

Cant get a stereo mix in my mackie hm4 headphone amp

Woah! Serious mixer! If you wanted an actual stereo feed to the Mackie amp there might be a way to make a separate headphone mix with that mixer (the A&H ZED series can) Or there are left and right 'sub' outputs that might help but you would have to get creative with cables. Dave.

Cant get a stereo mix in my mackie hm4 headphone amp

Yes you will because it is a mono source and therefore the signal is just on the tip. You need to solder a link between the tip and ring tabs inside your stereo cable*. Then you will get both lugs cooking! *Mark the cable as a "special" and avoid plugging it into stereo outputs. Not really...

Cant get a stereo mix in my mackie hm4 headphone amp

The "AUX" send jack on almost all mixers is just a mono mix of the various channels but I am not entirely sure what you are trying to do? Make and model of mixer please. Dave.

laptop sound cards(headphone jack), audio interface (USB), headphones

I rarely used headphones on a laptop these days but in the past I used the HP output of an HP g6 i3 W7 lappy, both into cans (AKG K92) and, when the need arose, into a small mixer and onto a pair of Tannoy 5As As I recall there was nothing wrong with the sound quality in either situation...

    Multie Recordings what software?

Ways to do this are legion! But first we must look at the basics of what you want to do and what you need to do it with. Sound capture. That means a microphone of some kind...how long have you got?! A simple'ish solution would seem to be a USB microphone but it is not quite that easy. You...

    Is it possible

As you can see Jeramaine, you are getting lots of different, often rather conflicting advice. The best way to cut through all that is to get some gear and start the process. I don't know the extent of your computer knowledge (mine is FAR from great!) but some notes on "saving" might help you...
