    Opinions on pop filters?

Pop filters are andy, but you can also learn how to not need them by: 1 managing your plosives . . . it is possible to sing 'p' without a blast of air; 2 not singing directly into the mike. Singing slightly over the top or to one side can make difference; and 3 maintaining a greater distance...

    GarageBand for cd album creation?

Some years ago I sent a master CD away for replication. That failed, and so did the second one I sent. There was a technical problem whose solution at the time was intractable. What I did in the end was take up their offer to create the master disk themselves. So I sent the individual tracks...

    FocusRite Scarlett and Powered Monitors

What they say above ^^ Plug all inputs into the Scarlett, and take all outputs from it. It has two headphone sockets on the front, plus the line outs out the back. If you don't get powered monitors, then you will need an amp. Monitoring your recording, listening to playback, and listening to PC...

    Song Structuring..

I agree. It seems there is not enough lyric variation to keep the listener engaged. And when you couple that with a limited palette of sounds in current use, it makies for tedious listening

    Song Structuring..

Yes. Repetition is important for listeners. They need the familiarity of things to connect with. However, they also need the new and novel, because that's where the excitment and surprise comes from. Balancing repeition with the new is a vital part of good song-writing. Too much repetition...

    Autotune on live recordings

I'm generally ok with autotuning. However I am less keen on auto-generated harmonies, whose pitch and timing are too precise to be enjoyable. Having spend some time in my younger years in what was then British Somaliland, I have an affinity for Somali and Ethiopian music, and their modern music...

    Recording vocals in stereo?

Agree with LBS above. There is no hole in the middle. If you record a vocal centred witin, say, an XY configuration, the vocal will remain in the centre no matter how narrow or how wide you pan the left and right channels. What will change is the sense of space on which the voice is recorded.

    Speed up a song

I don't know whether the korg can do it, but if you can upload the song to a computer somehow, just about any DAW could do it.

Get MIDI from Roland SE-02 to Waldorf Streichfett string machine

I used to have a Roland keyboard many years ago, and you needed to press a combination of keys to select particular channels. It was not an obvious way of selecting channels, and I needed someone to tell me that.

Would like some honest feedback please

^^ What he says. Your voice has a nice, light character, and you hold pitch and manage the timing well. However, it does sound as if you are holding back. It also sounds as if you are running short of air from time to time. So I expect your chest is quite tight. There is nothing there...

Opinion on quality - possible issue?

Highwayman has a more integrated mix. Ivory instruments are spread further apart and further back in the mix. Vocal quality is pretty much the same. Both sound really nice.

    Snare bleed through overheads

When using four mikes, I typically have a spaced pair of overheads aimed specifically at the snare, then one on kick, and a close mike on the snare. The overhreads are doing most of the work. See Farviews post above. ^^

Is microphone self noise any absolute indicator of a mic's quality or fidelity?

The current Rode NT1 self noiuse is measured at 4.5db

Is microphone self noise any absolute indicator of a mic's quality or fidelity?

I think that low self-noise would be a good proxy indicator of microphone quality. That's because to get low self-noise requires hi qualityelectronic engineering, and if high quality electronic engineering is part of the build, then the rest of the build would most likely enjoy the same hig...
