Live recordings and live sounding studio recordings

Realize now I forgot my question in my OP. Awesome, thanks man. I'll check that link out. Tonight's the Night is one of my favorite albums, "Come on Baby" being another good example of what I'm talking about. I really admire Neil and his past/current engineers and producers. Time Fades Away...

Live recordings and live sounding studio recordings

So, I've noticed that on most of the live albums I've heard, the recording quality does still pass as good and you really do feel like you're "there" watching the band. You can usually get a feel for the environment, if it's outside or in a venue and the size of the building, etc. I've been...

    snare drum mic'ing

I discovered this a few weeks ago myself while recording. It gives a lot more crack than the top. Best is to combine em

Different mic techniques for vocals and backups ?

Ok, There is a local band that my band has been good friends with for a long time. I'm a huge fan of their music. They broke up about 5 months ago but still have remained friends/in touch. Anyways, I've convinced them to let me record them so I can/we can have some recordings of their material...

    Cassette mastering

Massive was right. Cassette was marketed for it's ease of use and simplicity. You could easily fit an album in your pocket... how cool. Unfortunately they sound pretty bad. I think you'd need at least a 1/4" stereo deck at 15ips for the warm tape sound. There's an actual term for mastering to...

    Fifty dollar mics

Has anyone tried the speakerrepair.com GLS mic cables? Not the Hi-end studio cables, but the ones that are $10 a piece or 10 for $70. Are they any good, do they last? Or are they cheap and break easily like the Musiciansfriend ones? I'm thinking of buying their 57 copy with mic cable...

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

doctor, thanks so much for all your info and help. I'm very grateful. Great song by the way. I really dig the sound of the acoustics.

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

Oh, ok! I was unsure on that. Sounds great. Do you by any chance have the full drum mix online somewhere to hear? Also, have you found any other uses for the F15 other than OH's? Acoustic guitar maybe?

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

So it was the f15 picking up the cymbals though, right? That's what I'm most concerned about. I like your cymbal sounds.

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

Thanks. So far I've been impressed with Phonic. They have cheap prices but not terrible gear. My band has one of their large PA packages with a powered head/mixer which I'm assuming has the same or similar pres to your board. Were you using just the recorderman two mics, or do you add snare...

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

Good questions. Yes the mics frequency response range is 100hz to 20k. According to Audix, their response pattern is fairly flat, the biggest curve being the drop at 100hz. Slight rise at 2k and another small rise between 6k and 10k. I'm mainly looking for just a decent pair of drum overheads...

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

Thanks a bunch Doc. Man, those sound pretty darn nice to my ears for $50 a piece. I'm glad to see it picks up the tones of the toms along with the cymbals. I was worried the 100hz cutoff would render these unworthy as good overheads. What interface/preamps were you using for that recording?

    Audix F15 condensers for overheads

Has ANYONE had any experience with these? There seems to be a drought of info on these mics. They're $50 a pop new, and I'm looking to get a pair for stereo OH's. 100hz-20khz. Or are they crap?

Ok so SHOULD i upgrade my OH mics and/or kick mic?

Glyn Johns technique... I use it tool. It works well. I know what you mean about cheap sounding. Sometimes a brittle high end can sound way too harsh and cheap on cymbals. I know the 319's roll off after 16khz so this might be a good thing with cheap pre's like I'm using myself.

    Speaker for Valve Jr.

Depends a lot on what tone you're going for. About a year ago I built a 2x12 cab for my Valve Jr. head. I loaded it with the famous Vintage 30's replicas off ebay (Warehousespeakers) back when they were $20 (yes, $20!) a pop. I loved them.
