    Stereo Bus Compression

I don't use any bus compression on my mixes, however, I do have a compressor in one of my monitor chains so I can hear how it sounds with some compression without actually throwing the comp. into the mixdown signal path.

    burning speed

TY makes a great disc. I have a short-run duplication service and that's all I will use. I get a very, very low reject rate with them.

    burning speed

4x seems to work fine for me when I'm burning a "master". Burning off quick reference copies, rough mixes and such for the band, I'll pretty much stick to 12x or below, I just haven't been able to get audio discs to play worth a crap burning any faster than that.

    Bass question

Yes, it would be quite normal for the amount of bass frequencies to decrease as you go up the scale. If you want heavy bass freqs. all the way through the song, play a bass line that stays down on the bottom. I would highly recommend new strings, set up the intonation the best it can be and...

    Overhead Miking

I was going to try the ORTF on a drum kit. I've been experimenting with minimal miking techniques. ORTF calls for a spacing between the mics of 17 cm. and the capsules angled at 110 degrees. The 17 cm is supposed to approximate the distance beteween the average human ears. I've read about the...

    Overhead Miking

Hey Bruce,I was thinking about trying ORTF on the kit tomorow night. When you set it up, do you break out a ruler and protractor for the distance and angle, or just eyeball it?

    Interesting drum sounds

Drugs. :D No, but seriously, the toaster oven sat below a shelf where all my coffee and junk was. A couple weeks earlier, one of my buddies knocked the creamer off the shelf and it landed on the toaster oven. I thought, "hmmm, that sounded kinda like a snare". The old 6x9 was just...

    clipping everywhere

Sounds like you might have one or more effects loops cranked up to high, or the effect in the loop itself. Good luck!

    CD mastering facilities

"Radio ready" and "radio standards" are buzzwords that get thrown around a lot that really don't mean anything. Either something sounds good or it doesn't, I've heard plenty of stuff played on the radio that sound like shit. "Radio ready " is a sales term, a tool to sell production with.

    CD mastering facilities

Makes perfect sense. When you send things out, it's tough to let go of something you put so much of yourself into making. My personal opinion is the mark of a great mastering engineer, or even a great mix engineer, is not what they do to the music but what they DON'T do to it. When I'm...
