How much one needs to spend on a microphone and interface for 'studio quality' sound

A lot of the differences between mics is the EQ curve (frequency response graph), and the pickup pattern. Plus noise floor, SPL tolerance, and other minor things. Also bear in mind that most of us are "trained" for certain mics. SM-58 for stage, SM7b, or EV RE-20 for Radio / Television. The...

    Background Buzz through USB Microphone

You might try a powered usb hub. Some usb ports are under powered and that doesn't work too well when the device is powered by usb.

    Possible to isolate vocals?

A lot of tracks are mastered so that the vocal track is the only fully centered track. So you can say invert the right track and mix it with the left track to remove the vocal to have a karaoke track. Once you have that track you can invert it and mix it with the original and get just the...

    Background Buzz through USB Microphone

Are you sure that the recording application is pulling from the right source? A lot of devices come with webcams now and they tend to be a higher priority than anything connected externally. Tapping the mic, then tappling the LCD or whatever the other mic source is can help identify which one...

Please advise on indoor video recording

If the room isn't an issue, an omni mic in proximity. Possibly with a reflexion filter to make it semi-directional. A shotgun with boom operator is common for this application. If the camcorder is always pointed at the sound source, and the source doesn't talk away from the camcorder, a...

Youtube gameplay commentary microphone help please

Buy a swath of fake fur and put it over the mic element. Stitch it like a sock and bread / zip tie it off. Keep it short-ish hair so you're not eating dead cat fur. That'll help cut down the wind noise. Foam isn't that great at cutting wind noise. Barely good enough to minimize wind if you...

Why record with a computer when there are all-in-one portastudios?

A computer gives you a full monitor view for when you record yourself. Versus trying to view a 3" LCD at 6' or more.

    Shockmounts

I DIY'd mine out of PVC and hair braids. Looks cheap, but does the job. Even allows for two shock mounts to cradle the cable with the 2nd. Which makes the mic position more rigid... While still having all the benefits of a shock mount. Useful if your mics are SDC and horizontal. Because...

    Microphone technical information query

Test like these will test 3x thing IMO. The speakers (or other sources) generating the test sounds. The room / environment of the test. And the mics. So it's really a grain of salt thing, even with optimal circumstances on all three legs.

Large diaphram Condenser under 200 dollars

AT3035 (used) ($100-ish for me on craigslist) AT4033 (used) ($250-ish for me on craigslist, with Art Tube MP preamp, first of sorts, now sold) Blue Spark, MXL v67g, and some others too. Just make sure that it has a decent noise floor, 15dB A-weighted or less. And that your recording space...

Im looking for advice on finding a mic that works well for people with quiet voices.

You need cleaner gain, i.e. a better preamp. Getting the mic closer to the performer might also help. A headset mic might work in terms of keeping the mic close and at the same relative distance from the performer. If your mic is noisier than your preamp, getting a mic with a lower noise...

    ****The BLUE Spark Microphne****

I'll probably get one, if I ever get things together. Stupid economy. Can't even sell things on craigslist anymore (no takers, even on ridiculous deals). Shock mounts are dime a dozen. You can even make them with a little DIY and hair braids. I wouldn't let that be a selling point. Baring...

For all you middle-aged slackers (born between 1967 and 1990)

Does an Aiwa count if it played CDs? It took until the '00's before my Dad by a CD player. But only because his computer came with one. I lusted over a JVC when I was in school, but never really had any cash for anything other than a rare CD, although I collected tapes back then since they...

A recommendation for a sdc matched pair

MK-012 NT-5 STO-2 NT-4 (although one stereo mic, not two individual ones) KSM141 / KSM137 / KSM109 (not sure of the price points though) Should be mostly in your price range for mics. In no particular order. Depending on what you need. Fat Head II's might fall into that range. And other...

Need advice for a semi pro mic chain......

    I've got Avenson STO-2's ($550-ish new / I bought used for $450). I've got Sound Devices MM-1's (x2 for $700-ish / after taxes and new). I've got an M-Audio Delta 44 ($300-ish new / I bought used for $100 used). But I use a Korg MR-1000 ($1,200-ish new / I bought used for $800-ish)...
