A little of both I normally use the standard sm57/preamp combination, but I still like to use a little modeling (I still use the old izotope Trash plugin) for extra color or to add a little compression and stereo separation.

I'm looking to do some single-track guitar recording into a laptop DAW. What's the best USB recording unit in the $100-$200 range? I'm looking at the Tascam model, but I'm guessing there's more.

+1 for the Behringer I've had good luck with the Behringer MIC200 Tube Ultragain, especially for the price. It does a good job with the lower end of the guitar spectrum and isn't bad for vocals, although obviously it could be better.

Adobe Audition I really like Audition/Cool Edit Pro. Audacity is good too, but the interface takes some getting used to.
