One track at a time, drums first. How?

Obviously everyone has their own methods. I typically do a scratch guitar track with a click track first. Then lay down drums. All the while noodling the bass line in my head to follow them and the rhythm.

Does anyone slice up their vocal tracks and level match each syllable or note?

Does seem like a lot of work but if that's what works for you... I use a plugin called Trackslammer and seems to work for me. Puts the waveform in a block, best way to describe it. It works well on back up multipart harmonies. If all the parts are equally even, it makes it easier to blend and...

    Acoustic guitar distortion

EQ it out and mess with your gains, and change your mic, and/or mic placement if necessary. And if you feel your ''playing the guitar too aggressively,'' then play it not too aggressively. Playing style, strings, and even picks, in my experience, are all variables in what you can get out of...

    Guitars too crisp and crunchy

Could it be cleaned up some? Sure. I'd think just some tweaking of the tone knobs on the amp would help in that regard. Or back off on the pickup to take some of the harshness out. Mic placement as well. My experience has been trial and error to find the sweet spot in these matters. If that...

    Mics and Rooms- sensitivity?

As a ''hobbyist'' in my basement, I made my own baffles cheaply that work fine to help isolate the vocals. I don't get all willy nilly with mv/pa's and noise floors etc... I just bring the pre's up until they start making noise and adjust accordingly to what sounds good. My best vocal mic right...

Looking for mic for live performance. Is there anything better than a 58?

Thanks everyone who responded for their input. Looks like the Sennheiser e835 was the most recommended besides another 58. I do own a 57, but that is strictly for recording purposes or for micing an amp live, to which would be extremely rare for me these days. Thanks again and hope everyone has...

What is that maximum size compact flash card a fostex mr8 can handle ?

The red machines were initially designed as sketch pads for writing songs and getting ideas down, hence the smaller cards that came with the recorder. And they don't give much actual recording time before using up the space on the card. I never used anything larger than a 512MB card when I had...

Looking for mic for live performance. Is there anything better than a 58?

Hi all, Looking for some recommendations if possible Looking for a 2nd microphone to have for live gigs. I do solo acoustic at local bars/restaurants in my area but also at some private yacht clubs and private parties. At the private events there is often times where folks want to come up and...

Vocal Recording and Mixing Advice for Pop Punk / Rock

I rarely do a complete vocal in one take, although I try. Depending on the song in how I do the tracking. I use a stand alone recorder and import tracks to pc. I'll use a touch of reverb when tracking which doesn't transfer so all fx are done at mixing except for eq with the mixer while...

how do i stay on beat in rap

Talked to my son about this and how he did it and it somewhat mirrors my previous reply. He said it's not so much the music but ''the flow'' of the lyric. If it's not fitting, then it's the flow that is the issue. He would edit by changing the words or substituting using less syllables or more...

how do i stay on beat in rap

Correct me if I'm wrong, or missing something here. But isn't the ''music'' for rap computer generated patterns that run for a couple of minutes and you lay your rap on top of it? Not sure where the issue is here or where counting or a click would help or relevant. The music timing and/or BPM is...

    New to recording.

If you're recording track by track then you have both options. Go direct to the interface for each track or set up the mixer for 1 channel per instrument and send to the interface. I can see your point of less swapping by having each mixer channel set up for each instrument. That way you have...

If want to use the effects on my personal mixer at a venue where they already have a PA system, can I connect my mixer to the house mixer?

Could the fx in the mixer be sent to an aux or fx in on the house board? I don't know that answer. Lol It depends on what the house sound has to offer in effects. Are doing an open mic type deal? Is it a bar / club / restaurant? House sound can vary greatly. But it seems these days most have on...

Phasing when recording DI & miked simultaneously

I recorded twelve and six string acoustic using the direct out on the guitars with 2 condensers and it turned out fine. Did not experience any phasing issues.
