I don’t think they compensate - rather they get into the song because of how it sounds - and it makes them comfortable rather than feeling stiff because the vocals are so raw.
I get the best performances when players hear how it’s sounding rather than a build a song type of thing.
Allen & Heath XLR Wall Plate - or for a lot less you could get a 12 channel/4 return snake and wall mount the box - it is easy to do using a set of rack ears.
I record vocals with the effects on a buss - you get the way you want it sound but aren’t committed to the sound - however somethings are always on the tracks - Compressor, DeEssor - those kinds of things - but they aren’t recorded either - so you can manipulate the vocals anyway you choose...
Is that you in the Video? It’s a great song - well arranged - and the balance is good - but you should lose the Mustache

Wow! The Steel/Slide guitar part is sublime - took me a second to realize the rhythm guitar part wasn’t distorting - but it's the drums are playing along with it - very cool - Vocal is really close in feel and tone to Youngs original - great job.
