What can you tell me about the SM58?

I didn't say 'overrated for the price', I just said overrated. I've heard more than a few people say they are as good as mics priced in the $1500+ range. I've never experienced this phenomenon with these mics. It's just my opinion. FWIW, I think there are quite a few 'cheap' mics that are...

What can you tell me about the SM58?

I think it and the SM-57 are both overrated.

    NEVE 1073 Clone

Which Neve 1073? There are some pretty sizeable variations due to condition and I believe variations on transformers. Anyway, if you are looking for a rich midrange with a silky top, that's the 'Neve' sound. And you can get that in many pieces on the market - some of the more popular being...

mic mainly for distorted gtr cab and snare

I like SM-7B's on guitar cabs (with Soundelux iFET7 for additional overdubs...and sometimes a good ribbon for a more 'vintagey' vibe), and Sennheiser 604's on snare (although a great small diaphragm condenser sounds great on snare, but be prepared to see the drummer hit the mic). I'll probably...

    best kick drum mic?

Get a condenser microphone with a big bottom frequency, and a decent amount of presence in the high mids. Too much in the top frequencies can sound very unnatural on the kick drum, which is why many people prefer dynamics I think. But a smooth sounding condenser will give more detail and IMO...

Appropriate preamp for a TLM 103

IME, something 'Neve'-ish is usually a good piece. Basically the mic needs to be smoothed in the high mids/top and filled out a bit in the low mids, which is what most pieces based on a class A Neve design will do (i.e. Vintech, Chandler, Great River, etc). The Avalon 737, regardless of what...

    Schoeps on guitar

Pretty much the same experience here (for currently made models anyway) for a general purpose small diaphragm. The MK4 cardiod capsule is just as good, just more unidirectional and not quite as extended in the lows as the omnis or sub cardiod models.

How do you control the volume of your Active studio monitors?

I use an SPL MTC. I have 3 pairs of speakers hooked up to it.

    overheads and acoustic guitar

Look at either the Josephson C42's or the Microtech Gefell M300 pair, both are close to your budget and sound great.

Hands Down- Best Preamp money can buy?

IMHO, the Vipre is very inappropriate for quite a few applications, again my opinion only (and I sell the thing so I must be crazy right?). The slew rate settings and impedance settings do not turn it into a swiss army knife, or into a 'night and day' sonic pallette. It still has the same...

Yes they are all compatible. All are API 500 series architecture.

Mic Pre for 57 & 421 (heavy music)

For guitars, Neve is meat and potatoes. For budget I'd consider either the Vintech 1272 (2 channels) or the Great River 1NV (single channel). These are still good enough to both be in the 'anything goes' category, but if you have more of a budget that opens you up to more things including the...
