Get a condenser microphone with a big bottom frequency, and a decent amount of presence in the high mids. Too much in the top frequencies can sound very unnatural on the kick drum, which is why many people prefer dynamics I think. But a smooth sounding condenser will give more detail and IMO...

Pretty much the same experience here (for currently made models anyway) for a general purpose small diaphragm. The MK4 cardiod capsule is just as good, just more unidirectional and not quite as extended in the lows as the omnis or sub cardiod models.
