    $60 Snare

I've been buying cheap snares, it seems like, forever. There are decent Tamas and Pearls to be had for $100 used, and currently I have some USA keller build that sat used until I paid $99 for it, from some big drum shop that tried their hand making their own snares (they no longer do, according...

    EV666 Capsule

I have no idea what they used or what fits or...anything, but my first guess would be to try to retrofit one from a 664. They exist, they aren't terribly expensive, and it's an idea.

Pickup placement in a one-off bass build?

This is a helpful image, and I think this stuff is pretty thoroughly studied on bass forums. Comparing youtube audio reviews/demos should help you a lot, G&L specifically has similar models of basses that vary across the three 'regular' pickup placements.

    $60 Snare

I had a $25 no name steel snare and thought it was totally decent. Later I went out of my way to get an old Tama Swingstar/Imperialstar seamless steel snare, which shared the basic shell construction (differing hoops, lugs, number of lugs, and hardware) and that was great too. Sounds good to me.

    Drum Mic Advice

For toms, I don't think anything does much better than the AT ATM230 unless you are in love with something specific or feel you need a condenser. I'm a big fan of picking up Blue Encore mics on BOGO but a 3 pack of ATM230s is very, very hard to beat IMO. I also like what I heard from MXL V67i...

what would you pay for USED? SM7b

My thoughts: My 58 with no transformer was basically free via some horse trading (sold some of the stuff I traded for and did the math). Didn't have to boil it to get the trafo out either, but there is a resonator that cannot be removed on the 58. If I had to do it paying $99 or so for a 57/58...

any Real sounding drum machines ??

A drum machine tends not to be the most realistic option, and they kind of stayed in the market of the 80s/90s or earlier and haven't necessarily been updated, because sampling software and triggers have taken their job, in a way. Having said that, Roland used to have the reputation of 'most...

    Most natural sounding mic?

Nobody ever really seems to want the most natural sounding mic for vocals, they want euphonic, 'flattering'. Start with mics that are good for voiceover, Heil PR40, CAD E100S (or maybe even the E60 with a wind guard, it's a neat sleeper). I think you may be surprised by some low priced dynamics...

    microphone "open" basket design

It's both, everything matters in acoustics. The Oktava 219 is known to have a bad basket/weird resonances. The Apex 460, I think I read, has terrible comb filtering from the head basket. One of the Gefell head-on-a-stick mics is basically the same a u87, save for the shape of the housing, which...

Which Style of Mic Would Be Best Suited for My Voice?

Internet forums are LOADED with 'buy a SM7B' advice, but that's one of the mics I would try for you. Plenty of good sub-$100 dynamics from Shure, Blue, EV, Heil, and CAD as well. Beyond that, assuming you want a condenser, I'd try the tonal families out and see if a C12/414, u67, or u87 is more...

Differences between Radio Shack 33-1070 dynamic mic variants.

This is interesting, I had also planned on making a pair of my 1070 with another, and maybe getting a couple more. Not that it solves your inquiry, but I would compare the two, and possible get a third, if just to see what's under the hood. Omni dynamic bargains are neat.

Sennheiser MD 421-II or Someting Else?

Why not get an Audix D2 and D4 for the rack and floor tom? That's maybe the cost of a single 421, and they're great tom mics. Other good choices IMO are the AT Pro25 and Beyer D50d/i50D. The Beyerdynamics share the same element, I believe, but the D50d is shorter and has an eq switch for kick...

Need audio transformer for RS Highball 2 mic

Highball 2s are high impedance, they're the ones with an on/off switch and attached cable. Also, you can just get better microphones. I have a Highball 2, and I also have $15-20 mics that are better.
