What do you think of Reaper?

I love it. Fast, lightweight, easy to use, and inexpensive. What's not to like? If you want to know what awesome 'improvements' may make it into Pro Tools in a few years, just look at what's in the current release of Reaper...

    The SHOW OFF thread

Thank you for the kind words! The singer writes the lyrics. I've been working with him in one way or another for the past ten years and was finally provided the opportunity to join the current project and couldn't be prouder. Good catch on the hi hats. I'm always torn between audience and...

    The SHOW OFF thread

The Pleading - Decay Hi all, My band finally released an 'album' we've been working on for a while. Some of it is mellow rock, some a little harder. It's kind of 'message' music, addressing issues such as suicide prevention, spousal abuse and child abuse. it was all done in my home studio as...

    Apologies, need a sanity check...

Again, thanks for the feedback everyone! All of the observations and and suggestions were very helpful, not just for this song but the project as a whole. Here's the final mix:

    the ultimate guitar tone

Wah-wah pedals - awesome sounds and tones in the right hands (feet?), but for most they would be more appropriately called Ow-ow pedals.

    Apologies, need a sanity check...

Thanks! Like I mentioned previously, I don't think I'm even using the hi-hat mic. I dunno, maybe duck the OHs with it? I definitely need to look at that though. I can probably get away with bringing the 'verb down during the quiet part. The singer was not happy when I brought it down to where...

Thanks! That's actually a lot drier that the singer originally wanted. Lots of comments on the hi-hat, definitely an area to revise. I can't recall offhand if the hi-hat mic is even in the mix. I have a tendency to put my bass parts pretty far back.

    Apologies, need a sanity check...

First off, thanks everyone for the feedback! The singer is a good friend of mine, I've known him for years, but this is the first time we've been in a band together. He're really insecure about his vocals, likes them drenched in reverb and really low. I've had to fight to get him to accept as...

    Thoughts on new recording

Other than the bass poking out a little bit on the lower notes and the snare sounding a little over compressed it's good.

    Is this recording loud enough?

Overall volume is fine. What do you want to be louder? And why? The dynamics are really good, if you bring up the quieter notes it would suck some of the life out of it IMHO.

    MXL 990 Good mic?

Never used the 990, but I have a pair of 992s and really like them. They're a little bright, as mentioned earlier and yes, they do accentuate sibilants and plosives when used for vocals. They're a bit on the bright side, and it's easy to get a harsh sound if not placed properly. But overall...
