I prefer the D-112 too... it seems to capture more bottom end than the rest, making it easier to do a bit of subtractive EQ if needed, depending on the song. It's easy to feel the kick with a D-112 too.

I also have one, and use it with a 3Q pre/comp/EQ for tracking vocals. Great combination. ;)

You're right IMHO, it is a very good mic for the money. I bought one several years ago and have used it for vocals and for a room mic on several different sessions. I turned a friend onto them too; he's a jazz sax player who records his live gigs with a pair of them with great results.

Very well done. Vocal sounded very clean, up front and sat well in the mix.

I've had four PL-77's which I believe was the replacement for your PL-76. They run on 4.5v (and work fine with AA batteries) and phantom power. About ten years ago, they became very noisey, then quit working. So I took them apart, replaced the caps, and then they worked better than ever. I...

So, does "it's quiet" mean that no signal is going through it now? If this is true, does it light up? If no, is the wall wart plugged in to the AC outlet? Is the wall wart cable fully plugged into the DC inlet on the back of the unit? If it is, then your wall wart is probably shot - check...

I'll take a different tack... Have you recorded live music before you bought your USB mic? If you have been recording for quite while and have had good results with a separate mic, preamp A/D interface and PC or Mac, then I'd guess you're right about the mic. But if this is your first...

UPDATE : the Equator D5's are now installed in my studio and I'm breaking them in with various types of music. I'm floored by how they sound; they are painfully honest. My god - they're unmerciful when it comes to disclosing any type of issues. It's pretty humbling listening to some early mixes...

I'm looking for a pair of new nearfield monitors, and so far I've listened to the current Yamaha's, M-Audios, KRK, Tannoy Reveal's, Behringer's, and Equator D5's. Pound for pound and dollar for dollar, I'm leaning towards the active Equator D5's ($300 a PAIR). In the $750 or less a pair group...

Yep. That'll most probably be the problem. An SM-57 can handle a huge dynamic peak without batting an eye. The snare can produce a huge spike that will clip just about any mic pre if it's turned up too high.
