I'd try duplicating the vocals and then panning it out and adding a touch of reverb.

Has anybody tried improvising the words and melody to a couple chords and then building off that? it works pretty well, but then again my lyrics are generally quite simple and really not that deep...

It's pretty good. The harmonization is a cool touch. To tell you the truth it got kind of boring for me so i just skipped around the track. It mostly wasn't catchy enough. It might be cool for some easy listening maybe.

I'd have to agree that the distortion on the bass line is kind of annoying. Are you wobbling it with a filter? Try a side chain compression. 1:28-1:30 that part is probably my favorite part... If you really worked on making more intense build ups and break downs, the song will be more...
