    anyone got a PicoValve?

I bought one to have as a bench amp and plugged it into a G12-H75 that lives in an otherwise empty Mark IV combo. I was shocked at the sound quality. It would be not bad at $300. For a hundred bucks it's nothing short of a miracle. No hum, buzz, or any of that. I replaced the tubes with...

Adding veneer to my old bass

It's never too hot for lacquer. The hotter the better.

    recording question

The "desk" could be serving one of several purposes; 1) it can have built-in converters, so it IS the audio interface and just has firewire out to the computer 2) it is a controller that doesn't actually pass any audio, but rather just manipulates in-the-box mixing 3) (and this is the one I...

Compact Digital Mixers - Presonus 16.0.2 / etc

You can do this six different ways with the Presonus (at least). Easiest would be music to Sub1/2, vocals to Sub3/4. You could take a digital out to your recorder, or record to a laptop via firewire, or run audio out of the Mains to your recorder. The Presonus is a great mixer. Sounds...

Are these keyboard / synth leads?

It's a keyboard for sure. I think you could get pretty close to that if you take a cheesy electric piano (percussive, bordering on clav) type sound, like from a DX7, and gave it a little overdrive and some chorus. It's like the guitar sound from Heaven by the Cure applied to a keyboard.

Is a mic preamp worth it?

I KNEW you weren't listening to my stuff.... :D

Is a mic preamp worth it?

Ryobi is the Behringer of power tools. My buddy has a Ryobi drill which I affectionately refer to as his "Lady Norelco".

Is a mic preamp worth it?

    Right. That's what I said.

Is a mic preamp worth it?

Good studio speakers reveal many things that everyday speakers do not, especially with good studio D/A conversion.

Is a mic preamp worth it?

I have. The Avalon imparts a bell-like musicality to some sources that is really obvious and very musical, like the different between a guitar string ringing out and a piano string ringing out. However, that added roundness, or sweetness does not survive the transition to mp3 or to consumer...

Is a mic preamp worth it?

Maybe this will help the OP. Maybe not. I did a little preamp shootout a while back to satisfy my own curiosity, and I've tried to attach it below. It's four preamps in random order; three outboard and one built into my mixer. The outboards have a street price of $300, $1,500, and $2,500...

A Challenge! Make this vocal fit.

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm going to try to leave Stone In Love alone at this point, because the amount of time I spend on mixes is already bordering on mental illness. The song I tried your suggestion on was another Benatar tune that this girl really wanted to do, so that'll be up on my...

A Challenge! Make this vocal fit.

Fishmed, I took your advice as a jumping off point for the next song I'm mixing with this same vocalist and it worked pretty well. I can certainly get away with a lot less automation and I was surprised to find that it didn't sound overly compressed even though I was hitting the 1176 pretty...

A Challenge! Make this vocal fit.

I used an Oxford EQ to notch it at 1khz and again at 2.8khz, the Cubase EQ to roll off the highs a half db from like 6k and up, put an LA-2A plug on it, then ran it through an outboard 1176, a JDK compressor and a JDK EQ (don't recall the settings), then printed that to a new track and tweaked...
