    Recording doubled guitars

During the recording of the black album Metallica's James hetfield and his guitar tech would use a stroboscopic tuner to tune his guitar a few cents sharp and double parts (not sloppily) in order to create some frequency beating thus widening the perceived guitar sound. I'm pretty sure there is...

    Master This R&B Song!

Hello, I like your version. I started by separating both channels and putting them through light tube compression. After it came back into ProTools I did a little bit of EQ and light compression. Let me know what you think, the file on dropbox is a WAV file, 16-bit, 44.1kHz sampling rate...

    Tascam Porastudio 414 (GREY)

The workflow and decision making process of analog recording is a lot of fun. When we don't have as many options I find that we focus more on the artistic and creative aspects.

How Do I Record a "Small" Sound in a Large Room?

Yes, hanging blankets around the kit would help to minimize reflected sound from entering the microphone diaphragms. This would enable a more "intimate" sound with less room reflections. I would hang moving blankets on lighting stands, ladders, extra mic stands, etc. Try to hang them so that...

    Headphones...

I'm also a big fan of the HD280 pro, but in your case I might try the Beyerdynamic DT990s.

    Headphone Choice

Another vote for the Sennheiser HD280 pro headphones here. Sennheiser claims that these cans can attenuate up to 32dB of noise, they do not provide any actual data for the frequency of this noise however. I can say that I have owned the same pair of HD280s since 2008 and only now do I finally...

    high priced cables

Reading this thread prompted me to share an excellent, yet very technical, article on the effects of cable on signal quality, in particular cable capacitance. I think you all may find it very interesting. The article was written by Jim Brown of Audio Systems Group. I hope you find it...

    Taboo Subject

Magnets anyone? I recommend trying a magnetic sound hole pickup. The best one I can think of is made by Jim Kaufman of Sunrise pickup systems. If you can manage to find one you probably won't want to use the piezo anymore :)

Shure beta 58a vs beta 57a

Beta 58a v. Beta 57a I own both mics, the 58a is great for vocal reproduction. It has a usable amount of PE as you bring the source closer and has a gentle slope up from 900Hz and presence peaks at 4.5kHz and 9kHz. The Beta 57a has a more neutral (flatter response) in the midrange with similar...
