    did i damage my ribbon??

it's a very good thing that the last post you read before going to bed wasn't one of the ones about farting. you might've had a dream that you were surrounded by nude victoria's secret models--primed and ready--then you fart and they all leave, disgusted. now that, my friend, would be a...

    did i damage my ribbon??

i think marik was indeed right. i contacted jon at shinybox--and i must say he was very pleasant to deal with--he said it's probably that the ribbon is touching one of the poles, but could also be some loose silk screen material. so he said i should look inside--and the ribbon was indeed...

    did i damage my ribbon??

how do the let you know before hand? is there alot distortion, break up, buzzing?

    did i damage my ribbon??

another thing--i'm careful with my ribbons--to an anal, paranoid extent. how careful do you really need to be with ribbons? seems like some people say that as long as you don't blow in them, have them in front of a fan, subject them to high spl's, store them upright--you're ok. others seem...

    did i damage my ribbon??

yeah, i was going to do that today. hopefully it's something simple. but for my future knowledge--how can you tell when you're damaging your ribbon mic--is there a tell tale sign, a warning of some sort so you can stop what you're doing before it's totally damaged?

    did i damage my ribbon??

no moisture--and although i live in minnesota--it's never been exposed to the cold. i've always stored it upright in it's canvas bag inside it's hardcase. i'm usually totally paranoid about damaging it, so i'm extra careful. i've always used a windscreen. but basically, i'm wonder if that...

    did i damage my ribbon??

i've got a shinybox ribbon mic (basically a nady)--i've used it very little and have always been very careful about handling it and using wind screens, etc. but i was recording a guitar cab (from about a foot away--not very loud--it couldn't have been generating much spl) and it sounds like it...

Monitor Speakers for $500 or less, Rubicon?

howdy, i'm in the market for my first real pair of monitor speakers. i previously was using some klipsch computer speakers (& headphones). well they're dying, so i figured i'm due. my budget is about $500 on the top end. in that range--right now i'm leaning toward the Samson Rubicon...

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

i'm just getting the normal versions (w/o the upgraded transformers). from the soundclips it was hard to distinguish a big difference between the stock and upgraded ones. but i'll be sure to post a review as soon as i get a chance to mess with them.

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

it's definitely something i'm thinking about, the VTB that is. we'll see how it goes with the 2 i have. but $99 is pretty much a steal.

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

kidvybes--that VTB looks pretty cool, how do you like it? i guess these shinyboxes are the same as the nady, so if the brick works for you, i'm thinking it should work for me.

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

ok, thanks for your help. i called up Jon at shinybox--he said that 60 dB should be fine, even 55 dB would be fine for louder signal sources. so i went ahead and ordered a 23 and a 46. they're only a bit more than the nady--and they come with the nice "shiny" box. thanks again guys.

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

scrubs--nice work. it sounds great. but i'm doubting now that i have the pre's i'll need. the brick is pretty quiet, but only goes up to 55. the meek goes a bit higher--but gets a little noisy at those high of levels, at least with my other mics it does. damn. i want that sound too...i...

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

will my pre's with 55-60 dB be sufficient for this type of mic?

    electro harmonix ribbon mic

thanks kidvybes. i changed the title to "entry level" because i think the line of questioning is going to expand beyond the EH/octava mic. those shiny box ones look really cool, similar to the RSM. i see that shiny box has different models using different transformers (lundahl and...
