Great thread, just what I needed!
When making a connection between balanced out to unbalanced in, the Rane site recommends connecting pins 1 and 3 at the balanced end (fig 4, #5) if the output is cross-coupled. Now,
1) what does it mean that an output is cross-coupled and how can I tell if it...
I think you're on to something very important here. Untrained listeners hear when a mix is good or when a mix is bad, but they can't pick out what the differences are. While trained ears immediately can pick out things like "oh, that bass is too muddy, rip some 300 Hz, that picked guitar needs...
I'd be happy to listen to such a comparison. If you have the time to spare to record some sound files, I could host them for everybody to download. My faves for mic comparison are front of drumkit and acoustic guitar.
Did you hear the comparison between T3, ADK A48 and M149 over at GearSlutz...
Ausrock,
You are reading too much into my post. I was just supporting Marik in his question why one should put tube and non-tube mics in totally different categories, while you often see people happily comparing transformer and transformerless mics, as well as mics with vastly different...
THough I think Marik has a point...I mean, if there were no design differences, the mics would be identical. So what design differences count as small, and what design differences put mics into different categories?
Not bashing you, Ausrock, but I just think it's an interesting issue.
Best...
I used to own an NTK and sold it. I willingly admit I bought the tube hype and the rave reviews. But after having owned it for about six months I started wondering how it could be that my use of de-esser had increased tremendously...and I started to really listen. To my ears, the precense peak...
Re: Re: speedy
Ditto. I have a pair of white 421's...based on their usefulness, I could have paid double for them. (Of course, that goes for the 57 as well). Someday I'd like to get one of the newer ones that I understand are a bit brighter. Might be a useful colour on my palette...
I tried it for distorted electric guitar once. I think it would do very well if you're after a scooped mids metal sound. Seeing that you already own an MD421, I'd say go for the ATM25.

They're all electrets.
AKG had a mic in the 70's that used multiple diaphragms, can't remember the model no. There are probably others as well.
I recall asking Harvey quite some time ago what he thought of the concept with multiple diaphragms. I think he commented it as "interesting" but that...
Hey guys,
thanks for taking your time to look into this, very much appreciated. I'm getting a bit confused here, though. The sand filled walls idea sorta went overboard, and I started leaning towards the concrete block idea. It just seemed like a straightforward solution that is easy to build...
