7 mics on the drums > Presonus Firepod > Computer using Sonar 6.
The only option I see in Sonar for the input is: Left, Right and Stereo. None of these settings give me sound coming from both the left and right channels.
When I record, say the drums, each track only comes out of the left channel only. How do I get it to record in both channels...and should it be true stereo or do mics not record in stereo?
So I have 7 seperate tracks for the drums, 1 for the bass, 4 guitar tracks (2 for each guitarist) and a vocal track.
Am I eq'ing and compressing each track individually first, then combining them (sorry, not very technical) into 1 master track...do I then do anything to this master track? (eq...

Funny you say that...when we were recording we wanted to punch him in the balls to get him to sing the way he does live. He's holding back way too much and worrying about not messing up. Personally, I don't think his style as it stands goes too well with the music anyways, but just my opinion :)
Thanks for the comments, this was mostly an experimental process. We are looking ahead towards recording again once we have new material, hence the reason we aren't going back to retrack. 2 overheads were used pointed directly down on each side. I was told to pan the overheads hard left and...
Well we've learned alot through this process with ok results. The original mp3 gets a little distorted just bc the levels aren't tweeked, but this gives you a good idea of the before and after.
Products used to record:
Nady Fusion mic kit w/ sm57 on snare
Echo Layla
Behringer and Mackie...
Gave the kick drum some life...I added a noise gate since some of the other drums were sneaking in there.
I added a little more snap to the snare, a little more reverb to it as well.
A few questions:
- How should the guitars (lead, rythm) be panned? Hard right/left?
- My mix in general...
Update
Well, we just finished up the guitars and bass. Here's the raw recording. Both guitars are untouched and the bass was minimally mixed. ANY feedback on this would help a lot...this is the point where things are getting complicated...and there's still vocals to come :)
Newest Mix...
So back to the song...we have recorded all the lead guitars, working on rythm and bass this week. Hopefully, we'll have that done in a few days, and i'll post it up w/o vocals.
So far the only thing I have compressed is the kick drum. Should I end up compressing each individual...
So if you hear a drum track recorded in a basement with one mic and the kick is distorted, the toms can't be heard and the snare is overbearing...that tells you nothing?
Like I said, i'm not looking for the final mix, i'm looking for things to get me IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
