    Accoustic treatment help.

That's a lot of stuff in the room, which is indeed good for diffusion. Maybe if you really want to you can hang some ceiling panels or find a spot for some bass traps. But as others said you should start with putting the monitors and where you sit in the optimal spot. That will go a long way...

In-ear monitor vs headphones vs stage monitor

I've found that if you want vocals in-ear, a good way to do it is get an XLR splitter box and put it at the base of your mic stand, then run a short cable to the mic and use the house cable to plug into the output of the splitter box. Then use another cable to plug the isolated output of the...

Do I have the right acoustic panels?

My monitor that died was the last of my dual-monitor setup. Now I have a single 32" 1440p monitor. It's different but I'm used to it now. Three screens is going to be like some sort of musical battle station! I went in the back and measured. When I put the bass trap triangles in, I just...

Do I have the right acoustic panels?

Glad to hear you're doing alright! And good to hear about the kids, I have a close friend going through the same thing and all they want to do is be able to hang w/their children. Very glad she's not being a total jerk about that. You know, that's crazy; the power spiked or something about...

Do I have the right acoustic panels?

Yes! Speaking of, I need to get some curtains to cover the sound curtain and make it look less industrial

Do I have the right acoustic panels?

I guess you gotta make compromises in a home studio, non-purpose built room! In addition to the panels that were already in the room at the time (RealTraps MiniTraps plus homemade 4" thick Rockwool panels), I have subsequently hung a couple cloud panels up since I put the bass traps in last...

Do I have the right acoustic panels?

I found the files I made to test it out at the time. I left everything in the room the same, just put in the stacks of bass trap triangles. There's a big difference in punchiness! This is just the Fathead ribbon mic I have a few feet ahead of the kit. I am not lying I was shocked that they...

Do I have the right acoustic panels?

James, here's how I cut my 2' x 4' x 4" (~1.2m x ~0.6m x 10.16cm) rockwool panels and turned them into bass traps: I ordered two packs of three panels each, cut each panel with a bread knife. Used 3M 70 (the 90 in the green can works too but the 70 in the red can is strong enough) spray glue to...

    Recording bass

So when I record guitar or bass, I put a SM57 and MD 421 on the amp, basically center cone. Then a large diaphragm condenser about 3-4 feet out in front of the amp, and finally the DI track in case I need to re-amp: 3 mics/4 tracks per guitar or bass. Maybe overkill but it sounds GOOD. I've...

    Recording bass

I echo using a DI box, it works well. Also if your amp has a DI or line out, see about using that into the DI box then into the DAW. Run that into an amp/cabinet sim and you should get a good sound! I got more full/loud signal into my interface with the DI out on my Hartke TX600 vs just...

How many more panels do I need to build?

I will echo the importance of bass traps. I cut 4" Rockwool/Roxul panels into 16" tall fabric coated triangles and then stacked them in two corners of my room. There are two doors on the other corners so it's not really possible to have all four corners trapped like that. however I built some...

What's your 'go to' distortion/saturation plugins?

Decapitator, Klanghelm SDRR 2, and UAD Studer 800. Tend to use the first two on individual drum mics, then the tape machine on the main drum bus. Any of them for bass guitar

Recording with Kemper Profiler and UAD Apollo Twin

Distressor for sure! Especially on bass. 1176 is good too.

Recording with Kemper Profiler and UAD Apollo Twin

I don't have a kemper but have used amp sims with a DI guitar and as long as you're happy with the tone you're getting in the kemper it should be fine. You could use a very little bit of compression and/or EQ if you can't get it to sit well in the mix when you balance it with everything else.

    Sm57+MD421 Mic combo for Amp

Keep at it James! Keep working on stuff and the more you do it the more familiar it becomes, the more scenarios you encounter and solve, and every project's mix sounds better than the last. And there might also be some work in recording local bands for their demo EP so they can get pub gigs, or...
