    Watts, ohm loads, heads, cabinets... I'm lost!!!!

    Much clearer now. I feel like a hazy cloud of ohm confusion is letting up, every so slightly, as everything that I've owned in the past (guitar amps, bass amps, studio monitors, PA) have been either combos and/or powered speakers. Thanks for the information, much appreciated!

    Watts, ohm loads, heads, cabinets... I'm lost!!!!

    I've been reading about ohm loads, parallel hookups, series hookups, total impedance calculations, and soforth for the last hour and I'm no closer to figuring out what I need to figure out. I got a screaming deal ($50) on a Randall Century 170 head last week. It's solid state, 150 watts, 4...

    One Mic, One Drumset, Best Place?

    Indeed, a kick mic would be ideal. I'd love to hear what that sounds like with the SM80 and all the sound traps! A good mono drum sound is a beautiful thing :)

    Recording My First Orchestra

    If it's a good orchestra, a stereo recording with two nice, well placed mics is more than enough to give you a good recording. I recorded the Phoenix symphony for a while and we would drop a couple of 414s in omni mode from the rafters about 30 or 40ft apart, about 20ft above the orchestra. Of...

    What room treatment do I need?

    Also, look on BL's site for a list of distributors. There might be one in your area.

    What room treatment do I need?

    I used R-13 for most of it because it's thin enough (3.5") to fit in a 2X4 frame and light enough to staple to the walls with a staple gun. It looks like the R-19 (5.5" thick) is a little bit cheaper but any bigger than that would be a huge pain and more expensive.

    One Mic, One Drumset, Best Place?

    You'll need a boom stand. Set up the mic a foot or so in the front of the drummers face, then lift it straight up just a little above his head, pointing it straight down at the kick so that if you could *see* out of the mic, you would be looking down at the kickdrum head. Tell him to play the...

    Tricks or Tips for Performance Timing?

    Don't look at the waveforms.

    What room treatment do I need?

    My two cents: if it's not a "nice room" (ie wood floors, high ceilings, blah blah), just deaden it. See if you can find some Ultra Touch cotton insulation made by Bonded Logic. It's easier to handle than the fiberglass, it's much easier to find, and has a nearly identical absorption coefficient...

    let me see your studio!

    I got it on eBay a few years ago for super cheap as it was broken, got some new sliders and knobs, and had someone fix it up. It's a mean little punk and I really dig the polyphony. The only thing that could make it better would be to replace the thin-sounding (relatively speaking) Italian...

    a black metal song, anyone?

    Listen here: www dot vimeo dot com/18450483 A quick disclaimer... The buried vocals, distortion, and inaudibility are all part of, shall we say, the "black metal aesthetic" which has more in common with atmospheric/ambient music than with traditional metal genres. Actually, Wikipedia seems...

    Using Distortion on Recorded Tracks

    For future reference, I cast a vote for the Anatares Tube plug-in. It's very "not-guitar" and I've gotten good results on everything from vocals to synths to drums to cellos. It's sound ranges from a slight warm-up to completely damaged, with a lot of room in between.

    let me see your studio!

    One of the best things that I did was exactly what you're doing, to keep a large portion of gear in a different room. That limitation forced me to develop ideas where, before, I was getting lost in the options. Now I have to make solid decisions to avoid running upstairs again and again. Here's...

    let me see your studio!

    mi casa Hi. I’m kind of new here. I was active on this forum seven or eight years ago when I started recording. I eventually weened myself off of messageboards and such things because I felt like I was getting too caught up in the techy side of things rather than actually using my tools and...
