How is hybrid recording generally done?

I used to sync my DAW (Logic) to tape (Tascam 38), which means I could record to tape as well as to DAW but it got to be too cumbersome. Then I started using the 3-head real-time method Sweetbeats mentions above. All good results but not a very fast workflow. These days, I'll take some...

Nostalgic about reel decks I sold

After I traded in my original Tascam 38 in the 90's for ADAT's (mistake), I missed having tape, so I re-purchased another 38 for a good price back in 2009/10, before the prices got out of control. Then I picked up a second 38 that needed just belts, etc for $80 a year later. I still use the...

    Tascam M-30 Overdubbing Questions

Not sure this will help as its been a long time. I owned an M-35 which has more monitor and eq options than the M-30. I am strictly going off memory, but tracking on a channel strip and monitoring tape from a different channel, the tape channel was heard by flipping the submix (or monitor)...

Help me choose: Allen & Heath CMC 24 vs. Toft Audio ATB 16

I can't speak to the A&H but I have a Toft ATB24 that I use in my hybrid setup. I use the Toft mostly for mixing on channels when I need EQ and manual faders. I use direct outs on each channel and never mix through the Toft master since its on the noisy (hiss) side. There are mods out there...

Whats the difference between generations of the Toft ATB series mixers?

I own an ATB 24 in a hybrid setup. When researching several years ago, I recall there were some differences between the generations but can't remember what they were. I do not have the meter bridge. There is a lot of flexibility with the routing on the ATB. However, the inline monitor and...

Jl Cooper PPS-2 Sync Box & Tascam 48 with DAW

I don't sync much anymore, but I have a Tascam 38 connected to the PPS-2 into Logic. Essentially sweetbeats is correct. The PPS-2 connects via MIDI. I stripe track 8 on the 38. Make sure your recorded stripe level is not too hot (you don't want that to bleed into other tracks) and not too...

    An Interesting Drum Issue

This is a great point. I just finally picked up a couple DBX DX-4D units for my 38. I did some research on these and found that the levels can't be too hot with them engaged. Pumping sounds etc. Somewhere I thought I read the levels actually may show 1 or 2db difference on the VU's with DBX...

    An Interesting Drum Issue

As others suggested, might be dbx and/or levels, but you demag after every song? Its a whole different topic, but I rarely demag anymore. Maybe if I open up for routine or other maintenance, I'll do it then. But I'm always worried I'll get distracted during the process.

Reel to reel Tape Deck into Daw

I have a Tascam 38 8-track, but I use a JL Cooper PPS-1 Sync, striping smpte to track 8 on my Tascam. I can easily sync DAW to tape but give up that extra track. Usually though, once I record a bunch of tracks to tape, I just transfer them to DAW tracks anyway if needed.

    Tascam TSR-8... Mixer to match???

So far, the Toft is fine out of the box for most use. If you want more out of the master, you need the Jim Williams mod, which I will prob get somewhere down the line after warranty. The Toft needs to be a Rev 3. Gain staging is very key with this console. I agree they are over-priced, but...

    Tascam TSR-8... Mixer to match???

For a Toft, you'll eventually want to modify the master section, and the inline monitor section is noisy, other than that, the board has a a lot of great routing features, and I really like the EQ. I had master noise issues with a demo unit, sent that back, got a replacement, and all is working...

    Tascam TSR-8... Mixer to match???

I have a fully functional Tascam M2600-24 that I will be putting up for sale sometime soon. I am in the Chicago area. I just took it out of service in September. But Miro's M3500 sounds like a great deal though.

Benefit of using Inserts as Direct Outs? (With 8 Track Tape Recorder)

I also use insert sends from my board to where ever I need it. My insert sends are post-EQ. Another reason to use insert sends over direct outs is that it is pre-fader and there might also be some more amps placed before the direct outs.

HOW TO easily build AUTHENTIC RE-CREATIONS OF LA2A, PULTEC, UA176... ALL BY YOURSELF

I had thought about DIY when I was recently rebuilding my studio components. Instead I picked up a Warm Audio WA76 and WA2A, certainly not the high-end units by UA etc, but for around $500 and change for the 76, it seemed worth a try. If the units don't work out, I'll sell them and then I may...

    Dust Covers for gear

Can anyone recommend dust covers for mixers and other gear? I've checked out Custom Dust Covers for Pro Audio, Audio and A/V Equipment such as Keyboards, Synths, Mixers, Mixing Consoles, Studio Monitors, Speakers, Lighting Boards but if anyone can recommend other places or solutions, that would...
