Man, that's a great post! You were so creative; a musical MacGyver! I can relate; my first guitar pedal for my old Truetone (I got new in the 60s from Western Auto) was made from a Sucrets can, a spring from a D-cell flashlight and dynamite shot-wire. Still have it, haha.

Recently I opened Reaper and as a song was about to load, I got an error message about certain effects not available. I checked my FX browser and was disturbed to note a LOT of plugs were missing.

There are lots of other places with free VSTs. There are some synths and romplers that are incredibly good with any patch/voice/effect you can imagine...
