Great to hear from you Level Anything. Hope you are well. Just seen your reply. Looks like these are going to cost $35 each and not available in the UK. Thanks for the heads up about these not being true Type II. I'm going to stick with re-biasing to my Maxell Type 1s, around $1 each. Sort of...

I am wondering if it is really a cobalt type I. I get such good results with rebiased type I it would make sense. Easy enough to rebias, takes about 15 minutes
Apologies if this has been posted already but just spotted this:

Great news for Portastudio owners. Have a number of questions. Wonder what the price will be, how long they will be available for and if we will be able to buy them in the UK. Also made me...
Great thread this! I would just like to add that there is a school of thought that time itself is quantised. It could be that you can't get any shorter a time interval than maybe the time it takes light to traverse a sub atomic particle. That could mean that time jumps from one interval to the...
I just wanted to add that I have always thought the DBX on the Tascam 244 pretty incredible. After setting up a machine for type 1 tape and adjusting the bias I have been incredulous at the sound. Very difficult to discern any pumping sounds, zero hiss, terrific frequency response and no...
You haven't left the 3-way switches for each channel just under the VU meters set to remix by any chance? If you do this you could send the output of any recorded channels to the one you are recording on.
Thanks for sharing. I agree your voice could be a little louder. A great sound - who would have thought it was recorded on 8-track cassette? It has inspired me to get back to my 244 again. And also make me wish Tascam had got around to making a 16 track cassette - great discussion we had on...
Thanks for the info about the Wolverine JP - I hadn't heard of it before. It be great is someone could make a cheap reel-to-reel. I guess the film transport in the Wolverine is fairly easy though, as with movie film you have a simple claw action for frame by frame advance. But if it does sound...
Not sure I'd necessarily describe old tape media as fragile (apart from those suffering from sticky-shed). I've amazed how good 40+ year old tapes still sound that haven't had any special care taken of them - some even stored in a loft. And most audio recorders and players can be fixed pretty...
I would recommend a Tascam 244. It has quiet preamps for dynamic mics and sound quality in my opinion when well set up with a decent tape is indistinguishable from reel.
i had a similar problem with one of my 244s. Check that the pully and the capstan are thoroughly cleaned. Trace residue causes problems. Clean and clean again with IPA. I found eventually that the belt settled.
C90s work fine with the 244. I always got fewer dropouts with them. These cassettes seem to be using BASF chrome though. A great tape but I never got good results on the 244 with it. Probably ok if you re-bias for it but then you might as well bias for Type I!
I think the fact that the dbx gives so much headroom helps with the time constant also. I can't seem to download your attachment at the moment Dave but will look with great interest when I can. But I can't emphasize how good type 1 is on these rebiased machines. Great Freq response zero noise...
Yes that was the post I meant. I put a few more up after with a Freq response curve. I did use the same VU meters to measure the playback levels. Purists will howl but it worked pretty well. It helped that I had a batch of frequencies recorded on my first new 244 30 years back that helped me to...
I haven't checked out the type I tapes you mentioned but thought I would mention that I use type I on my Tascam 244 recorders. Maxell type I C90s are fairly easy to get in the UK still and cheap. I posted quite a bit here about re-biasing for this and have to say that results are superior to...
