Have someone go with you if you decide to hit the music store. Have your friend hit the cymbals while you stand back a bit and listen to how the cymbals sound. This should help in choosing the sound you are looking for. Wuhan cymbals can be a good choice on a budget but it's a hit or miss...
Is the amp spanking new off the floor, if so, then the amp will need a little break in time, especially the speaker. You'll notice a change in tone once the speaker has been broken in thus requiring a little mic tweaking to dial in your tone again.
Yup. You can pick up some good used and sometimes almost new Paiste 2002 (demo with fingerprints) half off or almost half off. Give them a little TLC and you're good to go.
Oh man it's been some time but getting back into again. Picked up some old stems from a song my nephews and brother did some time back but was never mixed so here is the first go round. :D
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Have you tried looking into ClassicAPI? They have some pretty good stuff. I've put together a few of the modules and several of the OpAmps (VP25, VP26 and VP312) and have been very happy with them.
(I would buy the OpAmps if you don't have a steady hand)

+1 on the Apex dp6 drum mic set. I picked up several of the Apex 326 tom mics when they were $25. it seems they have gone up in price. They perform very well and i use them quite often when miking drums live.
You can look into getting a ribbon kit which you can get at most music stores or call Mackie and request a ribbon set version G. Also try using DeOxit on the connections. The ribbon set will probably run between $120 to $150 a set OR if you really want a challenge, you can make your own ribbon...
