    double tracking

"How is double tracking a vocal track better than copying the track and offsetting it by a few milleseconds?" Because it won't generate phase anomalies, and all the subtle differences between 2 performances "thicken" the sound.

Which was the good one..the Boss SE 70 1/2 Rack or the Yamaha EMP100?

I have an SE70 and its predecessor the SE50. I prefer the 50 for reasons that make sense to me, your milage may vary.:-)

anybody read mixing with your mind?

I bought the book after I'd already been recording for 3 decades. I still found many parts of it useful and interesting. It isn't a "how to" book in the traditional sense. It's more of a "how to look at & evaluate things" as well as various strategies, philosophies and sometimes borders on the...

My instrument preamp has a line-out jack. What's that?

I'll bet you absolutely love the sound of a lot of compressed guitars - you just didn't know they were compressed. If it was done properly it would sound just like moving the fader up for the quiet parts and down for the louder ones. What you probably hate is the sound of over-compressed/poorly...

My instrument preamp has a line-out jack. What's that?

That's a job for a compressor. Without getting into a long discussion about it, it can reduce the difference between the louder and softer parts of your playing. An FMR RNC (Really Nice Compressor) would be an appropriate and affordible tool for your situation. I'll let the rest of the gang...

Where do you start your mixes from?

I try to start with everything except the "sweetening" (reverb/FX, solos, BG Vox, featured oddball instruments, etc.) up at nominal levels. I'll listen to the whole track getting a general impression of how well it works as a song/arrangement. Are 2 instruments fighting for space? Are there...

    brüel & kjær 4007

Yep, true (pressure capsule) omnis like the 4007 can be great for close miking acoustic instruments because of the lack of proximity effect. They can be somewhat problematic on loud sources in a bad sounding room, however.

    Stereo Mic Drum Overhead

I like getting my main drum sound from a stereo mic. Usually an AKG C426b or Royer SF12. But I don't use them "overhead"; closer to front-of-kit. Set about shoulder high pointing across the kick with the snare centered about 4' away from the kit. In a good room, all I might need to supplement...

Mic stand suggestions for heavy mics?

What John & Bob said - Latch Lake micKing1100 Heavy-duty Tripod Microphone Stand | Sweetwater.com Don't let the looks fool you, this thing is built like a tank & weighs a ton. If you have a mic that costs more than the stand, it's worth it for the security.

Sound Devices / or recorder (for Telinga microphone) offer or advices

I use a Sound Devices 744T for Orchestral recording. It's a phenomenal piece of gear. It's built like a tank, with 1st class pre-amps and converters. There are certainly other recorders that will get you recordings ALMOST as good, for less money - but they aren't going to last nearly as long...

Mid-Side Recording. What am I doing wrong?

Even in mono, I've never known a guitarist who stayed still enough to mic from 6". M/S at about 18" gives a nicely wide stereo spread on acoustic instruments, in my experience. Actually, I prefer a Blumlein pair for stereo micing acoustic instruments. People say that M/S is better because you...

I wanna hear some live recordings

This is a free-form jam/warm-up with 2 drummers, electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards & bass. Bass and acoustic were D/Ied to the board (Neotek), elec. guitar and keys miked with Fostex M11RP ("printed ribbons"), one drum kit had a Lucas CS-1 OH and RE20 on kick, the other had AKG C426b OH...
