If you have available tracks, try recording the drums without using the cymbals and then record the cymbals on a separate track. This allows you to EQ and mix the cymbals in with the drums with a better balance.

Being able to mimic sounds is not the same as speaking a language. The same as if you can play Stairway to Heaven doesn't mean your as good as Jimmy Page!
Look at a BOSS BR-1600. They are out of production now, but plenty available on EBay. I've been using it for several years and I love it. There is a learning curve of course, but there are instructional DVD's available.
