Shredders vs. "feel players" - an observation

No shit. I was using alliteration to describe how, although Keith Moon is considered the god of drummers by many, his playing lacks the back beat of Phil Rudd, a fundamental that most rock fans would agree is essential to the genre. Or as you say, "appropriate" to the genre. I was also drawing...

Shredders vs. "feel players" - an observation

TOTALLY. Swear to god, 75% of the time what makes a good band is the drummer, even when the guitars are front and center of everyone's attention. And I'm a shredding guitarist who has this opinion.

Shredders vs. "feel players" - an observation

These kinds of comments apply to other instruments as well, particularly drums. I've often felt a pocket playing Phil Rudd or Chad Smith could easily wipe the floor with slopfest Keith Moon, while Paul Bostaph would tear the other arm off Rick Savage. My opinions though aren't based on the...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

Same here. Although I still use much of the original gear I bought, it took a few years of trial and error before I finally got to that point. I'm sure a lot of engineers would tell me my stuff doesn't compare to a commercial product, and they are probably right, but I don't hear much of a...

How to deal w/ guitar distortion?

Mastodon and Sabbath's guitar sounds are most likely achieved during tracking. One of Mastadon's albums, I think it's Leviathon, has very noticeable clipping, but the clipping isn't accentuated in the guitars themselves, which tells me that no additional effects were applied to bring out more...

Backward Masking, does anyone do it anymore?

Pretty much all recording software has a feature that lets you reverse the wav file so that it can be played backwards.

Tracking guitars, the logical way for rock? (poll)

Except some of the posts you quoted specifically referred to soloing, so yeah, we really were talking about it. Regardless, a stylistic change in song approach that happens to focus less on lead playing has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with talent. Now, if you stuck to the original...

Tracking guitars, the logical way for rock? (poll)

Tell us how you really feel. I still don't see much of a correlation with your rants and the question of why people don't play guitar solos anymore. The trend is simply out, the guitar solo in many cases oversaturating the market like the retarded 30 minute drum solos and improvisational...

How to market yourself/get in a band?

That's an excellent idea. Another idea is go to your local music shop and talk to the guys running the place. Ask them if there is any music action in the city. They can at least point you in the right direction. One place is usually around any major university.

    Guitar amp modelers

Agreed. I use the modeller into a miked tube amp, and double track it with the same modeller as a DI. They both complement each other nicely by compensating for frequencies its counterpart may not have.

To click-track or not to click-track..

If you want the drummer to have better ebb and flow of his playing, yet still adhere to a click, you can half the bpm.

    how to compose songs?

Yeah. Use your ears and your brain. To write a good song, you need to listen to thousands of songs and styles you love and analyze them to death in order to find out what it is that makes them sound so good to you. A person who has subjected himself to many hours of funk music will pick up...
