What do you mean for a comp??
Also, why should you not compress on the way in? I mix in the box, and don't necessarily think the compressors sound that good as plugins.
What's the reason to not compress?
Monsterz, the mod is the standard mod. It seemed like I personally couldn't justify the premium mod, as I didn't know whether I'd use it much after modding it to begin with.
that's alright... that's a very good question. Since the firepod accepts Line level signal, there should not need to be any preamplification. You'd basically run the outs of the external preamp into the Line inputs on the back of the firepod. As far as signal degredation, you should experience...
The fact is, that this is the first application of this mic after modding. I was foolish and forgot to get a good recording from the Oktava before I sent it off.
My impression of the mic is that there is a considerable improvement after modding. There was more "air", less boxy sounding, and...
I agree that there is validity to dgatwood's point. But at the same time, I would venture a guess that a solid mic pre, like the RNP, would provide enough transients and headroom to make a difference in an entire mix. More clarity per instrument could make a big difference.
Hey Err,
Think about it... a Firepod costs what, $500 for 8 preamps, plus digital interface all in one package. the RNP is made of excellent parts, and runs around $475 for 2 channels. Think about it! The RNP will likely make a big difference over the Firepod, especially when the tracks start...
Thanks for the responses.. I'd love to hear more trained opinions! :)
I wish the voice was mine, but it's the voice of a band I'm recording, Last American Buffalo. You can check out their myspace to hear some of their actual sound at www.myspace.com/lastamericanbuffaloband
It would have...
Oh Yeah, For this test, I used the following equipment:
Mics:
Shure KSM 32
Oktava MK319
Cables:
Monster 500 XLR
Preamp:
FMR RNP
Compressor:
FMR RNC
Interface:
MOTU 896 with Preamps bypassed, receiving Line-Level signal
Recorded at 24bit-44.1
I think the problem, is that listening to the...
Alright guys,
I spent $99 and got my Oktava 319 modded by Michael Joly. I've included a true A/B of that Oktava mic vs. my Shure KSM 32. They were both used on vocals, at exactly the same time. I can't help but think that the Oktava serves a tonal purpose, and may be an interesting choice as a...
OH? Overheads? Monitors aren't top notch... fostex PM1, with a sub. Recording environment is decent, not a huge room, but I've got wall treatment and will be building standing baffles.
How would you guys compare the pres in the RNP vs. the pres in a MOTU 896. I currently have an 896, and am contemplating whether or not it's worth the $600 + that an RNP+RNC would cost. Will it be enough of a step up to justify the dough? Any thoughts?
I'm considering the RNP preamp by FMR Audio. HAs anyone had experience with FMR's products, or specifically their RNP preamp, or their RNC compressor? You guys are the pros!
RNP sells for $475
RNC sells for $175
I own a Shure KSM 32 LD Condenser, and I've been very happy with it for Rock applications. Didn't notice it mentioned much on this board. Any opinions? I got a steal at $250.
