Jon Visser has been teaching privately since 1996. His desire for excellence in pedagogy has motivated him to write his own series of guitar and music theory materials to maximize his students’ potentials. He emphasizes a healthy performance technique inspired by the Alexander Technique and the Gravity-based piano technique by Dr. Wirth; a methodological approach to musicality founded in music theory and analysis; jazz improvisation; songwriting and transcription.

Mr. Visser’s primary instructors were Glen Larson, Dr. James Flegel, and Jeffery Van (University of Minnesota), Dr. Christopher Kachian (St. Thomas) and received private lessons from Alan Johnston and Roger Frisch (associate concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra).

Mr. Visser also owns and manages his recording studio, Visser Studios, through which he has been blessed to record award-winning jazz musicians (Atlantis Quartet’s “Lines in the Sand” - 2011 City Pages best albums), Grammy nominated classical musicians Michele Frisch and Kathy Kienzle (Bell’ Alma Duo) and Roger Frisch in locations such as Orchestra Hall and the Artists Quarter.

Mr. Visser also performs with the electric and double bass, drums, mandolin; but for enjoyment, plays the violin and piano. He has performed, composed and arranged music for musical theatre, plays, classical and jazz as a soloist and in an ensemble. His guitar solo and ensemble arrangements have been played throughout the world. He has performed throughout the United States as a soloist and with Ensemble Emporté, plays Masses and concerts at All Saints Catholic Church and the Cathedral of Saint Paul and was a featured artist at House of Hope Presbyterian Church (2011-2013). His international debut was in Paris (2011). Mr. Visser has officially “retired” from performing (at least he is trying to as much as possible) to dedicate himself to his primary loves: raising a family, teaching his students, continuing education and his recording studio.

Since Mr. Visser has a busy teaching schedule, please contact him to see if lessons are available and to make sure the teacher/student/parent relationship will be successful. A good rapport with trust and clear expectations are important for the success of the students’ musical development.
