Okay, sorry for the delay, but I finally got around to giving this a try.
Here are three files - each a stereo wav (9MB) = 52 seconds in length. I exported to stereo because the files would play better in some things.

Anyways... the first 20-ish seconds is a bass...
When I first got the UA710, and then again when I got the Daking, I did comparisons between them and included the pres in the Steinberg MR816 and those in the ADA8000.
What I found, in very general terms, was that the pres in the Behringer were very usable. Using the pres in the MR816 as a...
Thanks for weighing in. I guess I was hoping that someone would have a definitive answer. :-)
I think what I'll do is actually do a test myself. Because the SSL has SPDIF out, I'm thinking something along the lines of:
1. Connect SPDIF out of SSL to SPDIF in on MR816. This does, indeed...
I'm not sure what I was expecting. I think I was expecting the SSL to be a step up - and it is a little - from the other two. However, if it was a step down, I'd have been disappointed and would have felt like I blew my money on it. On the other hand, if it was a lot better than the other...
I'm usually just recording individual musicians.
However, there are times when I DO track a whole band and want/need more than the 8 analog inputs to the MR816. That was actually the purpose, originally, behind getting the Behringer ADA8000 in the first place. So, I'd do, say, kick, snare...
I have three very good mic pres - the Daking Mic Pre One, Universal Audio 710, and the SSL Alpha Channel.
I have my main interface, the Steinberg MR816, and have also connected to it the Behringer ADA8000, which I use whenever I need more than the 8 inputs I get from the Steinberg. The pres in...
Hey all;
I picked up an SSL X-Logic Alpha Channel and, for the sake of reference, did a shootout between it and two other preamps in the approx $1000/channel (MSRP) range. I put it up against the Universal Audio "TwinFinity" 710 (in both solid state and tube modes) and the Daking Mic-Pre One...
If I go with replacing monitors, I'm considering the Yamaha HS80M, or even the HS7's. Not sure how different the latter would be, though, from my Yorkville 6.5" drivers.
If I go with a sub, looking at either the Yorkville YSS10 or the Mackie MRmk3 10.

Okay, so I'm thinking about what my next purchase should be. I'm at a place where my weak spot is getting less and less obvious.
Okay, my most obvious weak spot is my physical space - the size of my room. It's about 8' x 9'6" and 6'10" high. As it is, it is fine for tracking vocals, guitar...
That's awesome, moresound! Thanks!
I would anticipate that the RE20 would generally be considered a "better" mic - and at twice the price, it should be. (my e602 was about $200)
Adding something like an RE20, or AKG D12/D112 has certainly been on my list for the future. But until now, my...
I'm looking into this too:
Rode NT2a - apparently used for lead vox on Madonna's "Confessions on a Dancefloor" album
M-Audio Solaris - MassiveMastering on here loves it.
Studio Projects CS5 - Harvey Gerst, I believe, said good things about this one.

I'm a little wary of eBay, but I'm not against it. I only buy in Canada, though, now, as whenever I have had stuff shipped to me from the US, I have paid through the nose on duty, making it really not worth it.
There's a person who is selling a couple for $259/ea, plus $11 shipping. It costs...
I considered the RE-20, but it seems a little less versatile than the SM7. It is a different beast from the sM7, but I fear it is a little too close to the Sennheiser e602 that I have, which would sort of put it in the category of "a little more of the same."
Unless my impression of that mic...
Thanks for the continuing responses. Appreciated!
So....
Reconsidering another LDC altogether for the moment. My NT1 could most certainly be improved upon, but may instead look at:
SM7 (you know, if it's good enough for Michael Jackson's lead vocals on the Thriller album....) ($389 new at...
Hmmm....
My interface is the Steinberg MR816. Here is the spec sheet.

Am I reading it right that it only provides 44db of gain?
"Gain knob 44 dB variable (-60 dB to -16 dB)"
.... or is it 84...
