The clip had nothing to do with how hot the signal was going into the convertor (if it was even a covertor at all). It had to do with the gain staging before it got printed. Re-read this thread.

It could be done with eaiter type of mic but what seems to be the mic of choice these days (including by myself) is the Shure SM7. It has worked wonders for me and just about every other album with screaming that I have heard it on.

This is correct. Take the RedEye for example. All the DI does is balance and match impedance. You need to then take that signal an send it through a pre to get a healthy level to track.

It depends on the amp/mic/pickup/guitar combo. For example I just finished project with a ESP with EMG 81's -> JCM200(DSL100) -> 1960A -> 57 -> Great River MP2nv. Needless to say there was a lot of annoying high end stuff that needed to be filtered out. I think I ended up at about 10k
