    Hardware vs. Software

Not to be a dick.. But, if you are considering a Manley and your asking that type question, then I think you need brush up in a few other departments first.

    recording hot

What type of equipment do you have? It is hard to argue with someone who is making the best out of what he or she has, but I do encourage you to keep experimenting to open up diffrent avenues and methods of producing certain sounds. Besides I am willing to bet that the early Wu-Tang stuff was...

    recording hot

Thats a good thing and I encourage that to the fullest. My point is there is a better way to do it then you described. Coming in "hot to the convertor" is not the way to do it. But hey if your happy then who am I to say diffrent.

    recording hot

Hmmm...never said it was "wrong", so rest asure I am not on your "shit". None the less the way you described your situation leads me to belive that you "think" you are clipping your convertors. Is this correct? Is this how your getting your "Wu-Tang" vocal sound? Let me ask you this, what is...

    recording hot

The clip had nothing to do with how hot the signal was going into the convertor (if it was even a covertor at all). It had to do with the gain staging before it got printed. Re-read this thread.

    Death Metal vocals??

It could be done with eaiter type of mic but what seems to be the mic of choice these days (including by myself) is the Shure SM7. It has worked wonders for me and just about every other album with screaming that I have heard it on.

Active or Passive DI for Reamping?

This is correct. Take the RedEye for example. All the DI does is balance and match impedance. You need to then take that signal an send it through a pre to get a healthy level to track.

How Does One Reach the BABY BOOMERS (???)

Sorry but this bothers me a lot. I think the problem is in your statment that you don't "listen to whats new on the radio". Last time I checked the radio was no the only place to find music. There is plenty of bands out there today with just as much soul, heart, and creativity as there was in...

Hmm, over 3000 post and you are still asking these types of questions. Something is wrong with this picture. Good luck none the less.

    low pass filter for guitars

It depends on the amp/mic/pickup/guitar combo. For example I just finished project with a ESP with EMG 81's -> JCM200(DSL100) -> 1960A -> 57 -> Great River MP2nv. Needless to say there was a lot of annoying high end stuff that needed to be filtered out. I think I ended up at about 10k

What kind of levels am I suppose to be hitting on my mix (pre master)

Is there a formula for db to bits?

What kind of levels am I suppose to be hitting on my mix (pre master)

That I will do soon enough but I am still hammering some things out.

What kind of levels am I suppose to be hitting on my mix (pre master)

Well thats good to hear it from the your mouth because I think you are going to be the one I go to for mastering. Now I am really curious to see just were I am peaking. Another question... When using the word "head-room" are we talking about the room between RMS and peak or the room...
