I'd agree that Audition is an easy to learn, good multitrack program to start learning on. I started on it years ago when it was Cool Edit Pro. I just think that after you get more experienced with recording you'll find it somewhat limited.

Any of the URS EQs sound great. Some people like the Voxengos, but I'm personally not a fan.

The difference between the american and russian flavors of the electro harmonix pedals, to my knowledge, is that the americans have true bypass switching. The russian versions do not.

I second the Traynor option. I bought a YCV80 last year for around $640, shipped. It sounds fantastic on both clean and overdriven settings. I'm sure you could find the 40 watt version in your price range, and it would be plenty loud enough.
