    Bettermaker Mastering limiter thoughts.

    Microphone Question

freddie mercury was a musician who was also a singer, he wasn't a typical singer at all, I'm not one of those guitarists who likes crazy loud volumes, not all guitarists are egomaniacs, but admittedly a lot are.

Whisper soft / low volume mics

I like the neumann tlm103 for that kind of thing, it's a low self noise sensitive mic, I've used it for whispering tracks on metal songs, it has a lot of detail.

Matching quality + creating cohesion for album

they didn't really, but it was just noticable, my earlier recordings were not quite as high quality, it really bugged me, it was a classical guitar album so wanted the tracks to sound pretty similar, not identical but similar in terms of tone, it was a good lesson in learning though, will make...

Matching quality + creating cohesion for album

one thing I've learnt is record mix and master the album in as short space of time as possible, I had the problem of changing gear and rooms through one album, made it hard to get the tracks sounding similar without some EQ adjustment in mastering, it was all over the place.

Gain Staging as I understand really isn't so complex... is it?

fair enough, I did not mean to come off as stand offish either so sorry if I did, I think gain staging is quite complex in many ways.

Gain Staging as I understand really isn't so complex... is it?

I knew all that already but thanks for lecturing me about it, I'm not confusing anything I never stated that 0dBVU is the same as 0dBFS, not once.

    Microphone Question

yes the sm7b is a good choice, it all depends on budget, I really like the RE20 as well within that price range, it's not necessarily better, it depends on your taste, do what's best for you, nobody can teach you that.

Gain Staging as I understand really isn't so complex... is it?

clipping is desirable in the analog domain recording to tape, you can go over 0dBVU, but we need a buffer zone in digital, I aim for average levels of around -20dBFS sometimes louder, with peaks hitting around -3dBFS to -6dBFS, remember that digital audio has a noise floor just like analog but...

Plastering studio walls vs acoustic caulk

I think it's a bit snake oily, not sure if there's any real evidence of genuine improvements, you can use normal caulk, the key is that's its well sealed.

around the world in a tea daze reremix

this is great, very little to criticise here, I really like the production and detail, if it was me and I was planning a commerical release as in a single (radio edit) I'd cut down the intro, but that's about it, very professional job indeed.

Twinflames - struggling with bass and lead vocal

her timing is off, it's too late to the beat, I'd move the entire vocal track back a few milliseconds and find out where you can make her singing sound 'in the pocket' I don't think this is releasable material in this state, it needs some editing work, word by word if necessary.

Star Diaries - Hollow Earth / Galactic Zoo

I can tell it's some kind of virtual guitar, sounds industrial, I'll be honest I got too bored to listen to the whole track, I'd also prefer to hear a melody, sounds like an unfinished backing track.

My Spiritual Ride - I Wash

I'll be honest it's not my thing in terms of style but I try to keep an open mind, I think it's a bit boomy in the 3-400 Hz range and lacks low sub bass, definitely could do with some de-essing a bit or EQ to take out the 8-10kHz, only a subtle cut, maybe 1-2dB but it'll make a big difference, a...
