Apologies for the delay in replying but the board didn't send me an email to tell me I had a message!
Anyway, the 2488 accepts both balanced and unbalanced signals so you do not need to worry about using the latter type of cable. The only thing you must not do is plug an unbalanced cable into inputs A-D when phantom power is engaged as this will fry the mic (and probably the 2488).
As you say, balanced connections are less susceptible to noise from things like mains and RFI and this is why most people choose them however I have often used an unbalanced cable to connect things like the kick drum mic without any problems
