Happens all the time in my social outings with people. But occasionally I hear someone that isn't me shout "Christ! Are you going to let the song play?!" It always puts a smile to my face.

Especially when the market has gone back to singles vs. albums. That right there is a huge decrease in revenue.

You're still good. Adulthood starts at about 40 or so... But it's short lived. You're back to being a kid when you're in your 50's!!!

I've just recently found myself talking quite a bit about things that happened 20 years ago, and it's freaking me out.

I've made a little bit more money from playing live, but the only money I ever made off of my recordings came from streaming my own music back when mp3.com used to pay for plays. Now that I think of it, there may be a reason that site went tits up...

I put up some music on reverbnation yesterday. They had a default selling price for singles of 99 cents. What got me was that you can also sell your songs as ringtones for a set fee of $2.49!!! of which you get 50 cents. Considering that you can make any mp3 into your ringtone, I have to ask WTF?? is goin on?

regular people don't want to even learn enough to do that. They'd rather pay 21/2 bucks and ringtones are more desirable to a lotta people than music ..... that's fucked but that's the way it is.

When I was a kid, there was "rock", "country", "easy listening", "classical", and maybe another 4 or 5 categories.

Now there's, what, 35 sub-genres of "metal", and even sub-genres of the sub-genres, "dark death metal", "light death metal", etc.

So, how are you going to get a critical mass out of this fragmentation?

That's a good reminder. I gotta delete my reverbnation. I get nothing from them but spam. Since the re-design i don't get any traffic whatsoever - I mean NONE, and no listens or downloads at all anymore. Of course I was never selling anything, so I'm not technically answering your question - but reverbnation does appear to be 'dead', and my friends who are actually selling downloads are all on bandcamp....

Trends definitely change with band sites. Myspace, soundclick, reverbnation, bandcamp, soundcloud, etc. It's a microcosm of the music world - there's simply too much shit to sift through.
