Your temp. password is "password" then you can change it to your liking.

Some of you may recall that I posted a brief sample of the ACM310 here about six weeks ago in a live concert recording. The finished recording from that night has now been posted, so anyone who wants to hear the ACM-310s in action can listen to the full two hour show if they like. It's all bluegrass, which may not appeal to everyone, but these guys are among the best young bluegrass bands in the world, so it shouldn't be much of a hardship! ;)

For those who don't want to listen to the entire concert, you can hear the ACM-310s used on the dobro and the fiddle around 38 minutes into the show. And in minute 44, there is another nice dobro solo. Both fiddle and dobro are well represented here, so just skip around until you find what you're looking for. There are lots of good solos. The track that I sampled last time ("Deep Elum Blues") starts at minute 75 for those who'd like to hear it in its entirety.

Obviously, you're hearing more than just the direct mics - there are lots of mics open on stage (no DIs!), and the room/audience mics are contributing to the mix as well. Nonetheless, I think you can get a good idea of the 310s from this recording. And I didn't EQ them - there was no need to.

The ACM-310s are used only on the fiddle and the dobro. But they did the job well enough that I'm going to order two more - so I can use them on more instruments next time! So here's the link:

Thanks Chance for your comments regarding the ACM-1200. Yeah, there are sure a lot of choices in ribbons! And since you are the only one to have heard them all, it's hard for us to decide without others input.

Your comments on the ACM-900 really helped me. I want this ribbon for a male vocal and I think it would be great.

Thanks gareth.h.rees for your input. I was thinking the same mic, I just wasn't sure.

I think maybe I should wait on this one until another GB.

My only concern about the ACM-6802 was it being a bit sibilant. But, I can work around that. I still think it would be the best to start with. Seems like there are many who have loved it modded and thought it good stock. But.......maybe I want to take a chance on the 1200!!!

Any more input on the ribbons is welcome. There's still time to change my mind!:D

I think some of you are missing the point of this Group Buy....

Very few people have heard these mics. So what? These are absurdly cheap for that very reason: they are unknown. If you don't want to pay for something without getting a full review, then buy a more well known brand/model.

But if you want to take a chance (no pun intended) and have some fun, this is what this is all about. Use them stock, mod them, whatever. We all know that these are the same caliber if not better than most of the $100-$600+ mics out there, so what's the big deal?

If someone has samples of the mics from the last TnC group buy, then great, lets check them out. But I don't feel a need to research to justify buying a $50 or $100 microphone in a rare deal like this.

At the risk of sounding "flip" about the risk of wasting money, markitzero has nailed it on the head here. I was in the last group buy for a total of 6 mics. My regret isn't that I wish I hadn't bought them. No, I wish I'd bought more, so I had some pairs. (I've seen one on eBay for 3 times what I paid in the GB)

Look--I'm a gear addict--so I'm not getting rid of anything, even if I don't use it a lot. I'll keep if it looks cool (dumb, I know. But at least I admit I have a problem!) But I feel like I made a killing on the last GB.

So yeah, research what you can. But in the end, if you're sweating bullets about the risk, maybe you shouldn't take that risk.

Otherwise, take a shot and have some fun checking out new gear! :D

Really nice work! Wish I could play dobro like that. Since it was (will be) recorded on July 26, 2008, do you think I can get in to see it live? Maybe I could bring some mics from this next group buy, if we get them on time. :D

:rolleyes:;) That's funny! I didn't catch that reference the first time I heard it. I'll get in touch with Chris and let him know that he needs to fix that!

Maybe I'll have two more ACM-310s by then! :D And, sure, I'll get you on the guest list.

Hehe nah I'm loving all this! Like you say, its hardly like spending £500 a mic so for what we pay, they're going to be great.. even if its just to say "yeah.. i have 12 mics" hah!

The reason I wanted to know more about it compared to the 6802 was that if they were pretty much the same, I'd have not bothered with one pair and got another pair of ribbons! Just trying to get the most out of my budget, rather than nit-pick at which mic it is etc etc.

I really want a pair of 310's, but I dont think I can afford them with the other stuff I'm buying unless I drop the 1200's, but since I now know more about them I think I'll stick with the 1200's and hope we have another group buy next year. I'll probably get more use out of the 1200's and I know there are well known mods for them - so they provide a cheap (and very good looking!) base for them:D

My regrets will be the same as yours - I want more!! Thats why I want to be sure of what I'm buying heh.

Looking forward to them arriving, even though its so far away:p

When I said I wish I had bought pairs, it's primarily with the 310. I love it, and use it for acoustic guitar all the time. One mic is "okay" since I double track a lot -- one take left, one take right. But I do occasionally do a stereo recording for a single track take--and I'd love to use the 310 for that. I'd also like to try a pair as drum OHs.

BTW--the 310 is the one I saw on eBay for 3x what I paid... :(

In order to cut down the amount of confusion about the User Console login, and the registration confirmation email, I have changed the format and added some more information to the registration confirmation email.

The new format looks like this:

I would think that, today being the 14th, and the one month window for signing up and paying hasn't started yet, that that would be fine.

But those numbers sure do add up fast, don't they. :)

While reviewing my tentative order, I noticed that some mics mentioned shock mounts are included for ACM-310, ACM-6801T/6802T, ACM-900, but not for ACM-1200, ACM-70. ACM-3 comes with a holder.

Will shockmounts be available for the all mics in the GB?
 
What IS the retail price? I didn't think there was one, just a GB price. Perhaps we should stop the $ discussion right there though.
